Chapter1
“It’s never going to work!” I said placing my hands on my hips.
When your best friend comes through your door, you greet them and make them a cup of hot chocolate. But when that friend says something as stupid and downright crazy as what Ashley said, you have to say what I just said.
“We can at least try.” Ashley begged.
“And why don’t we fly across the moon, befriend a few unicorns and decorate our rooms with their rainbows while we’re at it?” I said, a little exaggerating with both my arms in the air.
I sometimes tend to be a little over-dramatic. It comes from my serious fetish with chick flicks and soap operas. But the witty comebacks and retorts are my own doing. No one has taught me that and I am very proud of them.
“Now, you’re just being unrealistic.” She said like it was the most obvious thing to say.
“Oh really? I just thought that we were playing the game of who says the most unrealistic thing in the world.” I paused. Arguing with my best friend made me forget to catch my breath.
“And guess what? You win!”
Ashley looked as tired as I was. She slumped down on my beige sofa with a big sigh. The beige sofa looked a little out of place in my house. I have just never got the time to decorate my house and buy beautiful furniture based on a color-scheme. So a lot of my things look like oddities in my home.
I rubbed my temples and moved over to the window.
There was a silence. We both decided to keep it that way.
I couldn’t figure out what made her think that all this was possible. That I could do it. That she could pull off a great feat like that. I had never dreamt of something as wild as that since the day I was born and I am twenty-two now.
She uncrossed her legs and broke the ice.
“Hey, want something to drink?”
Her tone didn’t give away what was going through her mind right now. But I knew, from experience, that we weren’t done yet.
I am stubborn and she is too.
I sighed.
It was just a matter of time. Might as well not fight with her on an empty stomach.
“Sure. I could use a hot chocolate with toasted marshmallows.”
“How many?” I noticed her lips curve into a smile.
“Four, please.”
She smiled. “Then get off the couch and help me in the kitchen.”
I smiled, as well.
There was left-over pizza in the fridge and I decided to have it too. Ashley just made herself an omelet for breakfast.
We made small talk over the breakfast we were having at almost noon. I never realized the argument took away so much time.
“So how’s work?” I asked.
“Good. The paperwork is really painful. But I pull through.”
“You say it like you are bad at the work you do.”
She smiled.
I knew better. Her employer was Rachel Ryans , the fashion industry’s prominent fashion designer. I have been to a few of her shows with Ashley. To speak the truth, Ashley practically dragged me to them ‘to see her idol’.
“So how’s your work?”
“The cupcake shop is fine. Besides Julie takes care of me like I am her daughter.”
“She doesn’t have a family, if memory serves right?”
“Yeah.” My tone grew sad. “ Her husband passed away and she has no child of her own.”
“But she has me now.” I smiled.
“And you alone are like one big family.”
I smiled while biting at the slice of my cheese pizza.
After finishing, I picked up the plates and began washing them while A dried them.
We talked about varying topics from fashion shows in Paris to cupcake flavor ‘Hanna Banana’
I didn’t realize when it was time for her to leave.
Through the window, the sun cast an amber light across my living room. It was near the horizon.
Ashley picked up her mint green purse. It matched her white thigh-length dress.
“Please tell me you’ll think about it.” She said after walking out the door.
“Think about what.” I had almost forgot.
She raised her eyebrows and sighed trying to give me time to remember. I didn’t want to start another argument as much as she did. I sighed and stared at the ground.
“Please.” She said in a soft whisper.
I held the door knob firmly in my hand.
“Why the hell do you want me to do this so bad?”
Her reply shocked me.
“Because if you don’t, I could lose my job.”
