Mackenzie's POV

As I sat twirling my straw in my milkshake, I thought about the past year. I've finished school when I aged 16. I skipped Grade 9 and 10. I was bullied alot in my school career. Being smaller then everyone else and being smarter then most. I would be teased and told to use the brain of mine and think of a creative way to kill myself.

But throughout everything that had happened to me this past year. I pushed through. Having a house to myself, I always had a quiet place to study. Although feeling alone was what I often felt, it felt nice to finally be alone and be away from all the teasing.

I was always one with a creative mind. When I was smaller I would almost always be able to make a picture out of everything. I thought I was weird but my parents told me I had a gift. A gift that no one else had. A gift that was granted to me but I don't believe my parents anymore.

As I grew older they started to care less about me and more about their drug addictions. My young self at that time didn't know what that was. One day my mum sat me down and told me that she would never leave me. She lied. She lied right through her teeth. The next day was my Tenth birthday.

Dad told me that he was going to take me to a park. As we got into the car, I looked over at my mum and saw her staring at me intently. I shrugged it off, not caring at the time. I was only happy that maybe they still care about me. Maybe they still love me. Now that I looked back, I see how stupid I was. To think that I thought that those heartless people loved me. They only loved themselves.

But anyway, we drove for 2 hours. As my dad pulled up in a driveway. I saw a big sign. It read orphanage. I asked why. I screamed why. No answer. My little heart was racing. I was thinking about all the things that could to happen to me.

As the gates opened, I saw an old women standing inside the building. As my parents unlocked the doors. I ran. I ran as fast as I could. Knowing what was going to happen to me if I didn't. Knowing that if I looked back, I might get caught. I've read many books about what happens in an orphanage.

I was scared. Scared out of my mind. As I ran I bumped into a boy that looked about 1 year older then me. His mum was right next to him. She stopped me and asked me questions. Next thing I knew I was going home with them. They were sweet people but I didn't belong there.

I stayed with them for two years. For two years they took care of me. They legally adopted me. I was treated like a daughter and a sister. I was welcomed. One night I lay in bed thinking about my parents. About how I'm better of without them. Next thing I saw was fire. Black smoke. A fire broke out. That night my life came crashing down.

I was the only one alive. I inherited everything they owned. I inherited the very house I live in but I didn't want tangible objects. I wanted my family back. My real family not the drug addicts. The ones who cared. Cause family isn't determined by blood. It's determined by who really cares about you...
