don't let me go ~ Jack Frost

It hurt to breathe.
But that little kid had run into the road and when you saw that car coming you knew you had to do something.
But you didn't think it would kill you.
It was getting colder and colder and you could see your labored breaths in the air, watched as the clouds of vapor appeared and disappeared, your vision turning foggy. Frost covered the ground as people crowded around you, as sirens could be heard in the distance. It spread across your hair and onto your face, the tops of your cheekbones and your eyelashes. Jack had only left for three minutes.
And now here you were.
He was kneeling on the ground, staring at you with wide eyes as tears fell down his cheeks. Your head fell to the side, letting you watch as your boyfriend broke down. "Jack." You whisper. He struggles to get past the people crowded around you. He makes snow start to fall until it's coming down in hard sheets. The people scatter and you gasp as the cold starts to affect you. You shiver and Jack kneels beside you, running a shaky hand through your frost covered hair. He lifts you up, flying away to a different spot.
A clearing in the woods.
You look up at the sky, the clouds parting so that the moon shone down on the two of you. You marveled at the stars, at how beautiful they looked as you were taking your dying breaths. "Jack." You whisper, looking at the crying boy. He held you close to him, your head cradled in his lap. "The moon." You whisper, a soft smile on your lips. "It's beautiful." You struggled to breath and Jack shifted you so that your head was resting on his shoulder. "I love you." His cries turned to sobs, and they racked through his body in harsh jerks. "I love you too." You whisper back, reaching up and pressing your lips against his. It took him a moment to respond, but when he did you realized you would be okay dying like that.
In the arms of someone who loved you, content with the life you had, no matter how short it was.
He pulled away and stroked your cheek. "Don't let me go." You whisper, trying to catch your breath. "Never." His voice cracked.
Your eyes fluttered shut and your heart gave out, your body falling limp. His eyes widened and he clutched you close to him, a fresh wave of sobs reaching through him. "Don't leave me." He whispered.
