Me: Where the fuck is my little brother?
Dave: Oh jamal, I took his ass back to his momma. I told her don't be dropping his ass off here no more
Me: Bitch you must be stupid. I will not stay anywhere that he is not welcome
.....
I run to my car and I head to the only place he could've found my mom and that is in the drug hall. I get out my car and I make it through a crowd of people. There are people everywhere, most are high and smell like they haven't showered in months. Finally I see Jamal on the side of the building balled up in a blanket with my mom nowhere to be found. I walk closer, he's not sleeping he's just laying there. I tap him on the shoulder and the conversation starts.
.....
Me: Jamal baby, get up. Let's go home
Jamal: I knew you were coming. I knew you wouldn't leave me here
Me: I'll always come if you need me. I promise, I'm so sorry you had to go through this.
Jamal: Do we have to go back there?
Me: Yes baby I'm sorry but its only for a second to get our stuff. Then we'll never have to see him again, deal?
Jamal: Deal
....
We get into the car to head back to Dave's apartment. The car ride there was filled with an eerie silence. The both of us dreaded seeing Dave again. Jamal out of fear and me out of anger. I wanted to knock his damn head off but my first priority was jamal and making sure he was safe and ok. A plan formed in my head, go in, grab the stuff and leave as soon as possible. When we pulled up to the apartment and Dave's car was gone, he probably left out to get some kind of alcohol. Even though I knew he wouldn't be gone long his leaving gave me a sense of calmness. Maybe I could grab everything and leave before he cane back. I don't think seeing him right now is good for neither Jamal nor me. Too bad luck has never truly been on my side.
Me: Jamal go to your room and pack your stuff, don't worry about grabbing everything. Get only what you need.
He just nodded and took off into his room. I started to pack my own clothes and accessories while also taking the cash I stashed in a book. It wasn't much but it would be enough to get a hotel for a few nights, food, and gas if we had no where to go. I was zipping up my suitcase when Jamal ran into the room
Jamal: He's here Glenn. I saw him outside, he's coming in.
Me: Calm down baby, its ok. I'll protect you
Dave: Come on out, you know you can't hide from me
Me: Jamal get under the bed and don't say a word
Jamal ran under the bed just in time because not soon after Dave came stumbling into the room. His eyes were filled with a dark anger that had consumed him.
Dave: Where is the little bastard? I knew he's in here. Did you really think you could leave me?
Me: He's not here, I was packing his stuff before I go to get him. I don't have to explain myself to you, you're lucky I don't whoop your ass right now.
Dave: You just think you're so tough, so smart. You just think you can use everybody then leave
Me: I never used you Dave..
Dave: Shut up
Me: Fuck you d-
Dave reached across the distance between them and back handed the side of Glenns face. She fell to the floor while holding her bloodied mouth.
Me: I can't believe you hit me. I'm gonna have your ass up, I swear.
Dave: Shut up and have my dinner cooked by the time the games off.
He turned and left the room
Me: Don't worry Jamal, don't come out. I'll handle this and then I'll come get you
I walked out of the room and into the kitchen, he turned and gave me a passing slight look then turned back to the game. I turned on the water and grabbed a cast iron skillet. While the water ran deafening my footsteps I creeped behind him and slammed the pan into the back of his head. He slumped over instantly, knocked out. I took this time to go get the rest of the stuff and Jamal. I grabbed our bookbags and dropped down in front of the bed with the bags on my shoulders.
Me: Jamal come out baby, its ok. We need to leave
Jamal: Ok, I was so scared.
Jamal came out and fell into my lap hugging me. I held him close then let him go.
Me: Let's go Jamal
We got off the floor and left the place that was once our personal hell for far too long.
