Frustrated, I slam the book down onto the table with a unsatisfying muffled thump. I had been trying to decipher book for the past hour and a half, and what progress I made was painfully slow; it took me the entire time to translate a meager three quarters of a page using a Japanese to English dictionary. On top of my slow progress, what I was able to understand made little sense; it seemed like an instruction manual or something, but was about summoning fire and floating in mid-air.
Shaking my head in disgust at my meager findings, I catch a glimpse of movement out of the corner of my eye. Walking towards me was Steve, his cocky swagger setting my teeth on edge. He leaned over my shoulder and I froze; every muscle in my body tense with agitation. "What are you doing?" I growled, not turning around.
"Nothin'," he responds, "Whatcha reading?"
"A book." I reply, not bothering to turn around.
Leaning forward even further, he asks innocently, "What, you won't accept help from a big bad vampire?"
"No" I glower, "What do you want?'
"Me?" he blinks slowly, pretending to be hurt, "I just want to help in any way I can."
"I don't believe you for a second," I glance at him apprehensively, "so either tell me what you really want or go away!"
"Fine," he sighs, "I happen to have a problem that I need your help with." and there it is- no one ever offers help without expecting something in return.
"Why would I help you?" I scoff, eyeing him suspiciously.
Steve smiles slightly, as if confident that I will cave, "Because I can help you save your sister"
I recoil in surprise before answering, mistrust evident in my voice, " If you so much as touch her, I will gut you, and scatter your entrails across the ends of the earth." I'm not sure how he knows about Abby, but he will never go anywhere near her.
"Settle down," he laughs, though I am satisfied to see a hint of fear behind his eyes, "You'll need me eventually." and with that, he saunters out of the room.
And with that, my brain slowly begins to wake up from it's lock-down, Protect Abby state, and I begin to filter through the possibilities of how he knows. While there are a few possible answers, I keep coming back to one- Christine.
