Two words: crash landing.
As soon as we got out of the portal and before I could redirect us, Streak and I were thrown into an uneven sheet of thick treetops. Streak luckily got his grip on top of a tree while I not-so-gracefully slipped through the branches and fell onto some patchy grass and dirt. My weight brought down a thick branch and it knocked me in the head; I cursed momentarily then Streak appeared by my side. He came close and sniffed me over in search of any injuries; he spotted a few very minor cuts, but he found nothing more.
"I'm fine, I'm fine," I chuckled, sitting up and rubbing his cheek. "Just a few scratches," I rubbed the back of my head where the branch struck me. "Besides, I've got a hard head." This made Streak roll his eyes and I proceeded to remove the splinters from my arms. When they were clear, except for the few remaining scratches, I stood up and a sudden feeling of dizziness hit me. Caught off balance, Streak instinctively zipped around me to catch me, but I managed to stay on foot.
I bet if Streak could talk, he would be mimicking me when I said 'I'm fine, I'm fine.' The dizziness had subsided and I suspected it was either the branch's doing or was a side-effect of going through the portal and moving around too fast afterward. Since the royals I left behind were in such a hurry they didn't get the chance to tell me everything about the portal in which I was entering; basically they just said, "go through and come back." I didn't know if there were any side effects of using the portal or anything like that. Live and learn, I guess? I had thought.
I blinked hard a few times while Streak hesitantly circled back around to the front of me, giving me a wary look.
"Do you know where we landed?" I glanced around, absentmindedly changing the subject. We were surrounded by green, every noise we heard consisting solely of lightly-rustling bushes and birds. Neither of us could hear rushing water; it was highly likely we were in the middle of nowhere.
"Let's get a better view," I said and mounted Streak who skyrocketed into the air as soon as I was stable.
As we hovered high above the trees, we were both shocked at what we saw.
Trees, trees and more trees. Some expansive water to the far right, some sky-scraping mountains in the distance ahead and to the left, and even more trees. The sun was high in the sky which bore no signs of dimming just yet and there was not a cloud in sight. Despite the satisfying, free feeling of the light breeze brushing by and the quiet and calm atmosphere, my heart sank.
This mission was gonna take forever.
Streak lifted his nose and stuck out his forked tongue, gathering the scents of everything around him like a snake. It should be easier to locate things in the air than on the ground surrounded by trees upon trees.
He turned in the air and I leaned to the side, giving him a questioning look. "Anything, bud?"
Streak looked silly with his tongue out. Though the forked tongue may be intimidating, his face was the opposite (until he got angry, that is). He had a thick snout like a dog's and a head shaped kind of like a cat's, and stout, blunt spikes striking straight outward on the sides of his face and there were two towards the back of the top of his head. He had electric-blue spines running down his backside; they receded into the midnight scales just before the back then continued on the rump and to the tail, like a wave. Doesn't sound too cute, but what made it just that were his eyes and the expressions he made. His eyes were a yellowish-olive color and large, rounded and slitted. He looked fast, his name made it sound like he was fast, and he was fast.
Streak was a fast dragon.
Streak made a quiet grumbling sound which caught my attention. He turned around and I spotted smoke beginning to rise from the trees just ahead. Fire, I instantly thought. Streak nodded his head violently in the direction of the smoke and I, being as curious as he was, led us towards it.
What would be waiting for us?

Like EFTTW, this book will also be going on hiatus for awhile. I know this book only just started but the plot I had planned was kind of dumb in my opinion and I lost interest quickly. I'll most likely return to it sometime in the future but not until I think of a cooler plot and can commit to longer stories.
I'll be more active on my newest book for short stories. See you there!
Sleep well in your dragon nest, DOA. I'll be back.
