"BONG, DING,BONG,DING" "Mister Rodney! Your mamma says you need to come inside now.", Mae Thompson said as she steadied the dinner bell. Rodney ran over to the kitchen door and walked inside. As he turned the corner and entered the foyer, he saw a familiar face. It was his uncle. Uncle Maxwell was Mister Belle's Brother. He owned a tobacco plantation in Mississippi. He had brown hair, violet eyes, and he was well beyond rich. Maxwell's manor was three times the size of Rodney's. Miss Belle had no idea why tobacco was such a profit. Rodney thought it tasted sour . "My boy!" Uncle Maxwell exclaimed. "How are you?". "I'm good! It's nice to see you. Ma said you were comin' at six. Its seven o'clock!". "I wanted to be fashionably late". "Thats your best excuse?", Mister Belle said. They all chuckled, including Mae Thompson and Jonah. "Apparently it is" , Miss Belle said. "Well, I didn't travel all this time for nothin'! Let's eat.". "Way ahead o' ya' sir!", Mae Thompson said from the kitchen with a giggle. With her voice drifted a splendid aroma of spices, vegetables, and wine.
They all walked to the dining room and sat down to Miss Belle's fine china dishes, delicate silverware, and crystal glass. Jonah strode in and placed soup in everyone's bowls. When the door to the kitchen closed, Mother broke the ice by saying,"Just you wait until you taste Mae's soup!". Jonah poured everyone wine except Rodney, and gave him some water. Uncle Maxwell said grace and started to eat. Followed by everone else. A knock at the door caused everyone to look up. Jonah ran to the door and kept the chain lock closed. "Mister Belle, someone is here to see you." he said. "Excuse me.", Mister Belle said as he stood up and walked to the front door. "Yes?" he said. Rodney heard another voice reply. His father gasped. For some reason his father and the stranger got quiet. He recognized the voice. It was Mister Peren, the overseer. Then he heard one name that shook him like a stampede of horses. The one name that he dreaded to hear in that tone. "Dante".
