A couple of weeks later Eliza and Alexander decided to move the family upstate. They told Theodosia to write to them whenever she wanted and promised she would always have a home with them. She thanked them politely but inside she was dying. She would never see her second family again. She would never see her best friend again.
Over the next couple months Theodosia's mental health slowly began to deteriorate. Her best friend had been shot right in front of her. She knew it was going to happen but she didn't do anything. She could have jumped in the way of the bullet. Her father wouldn't have cared that she was gone. He was too caught up in politics to care about her.
Theodosia thought about this every second of everyday for months on end. One day her father came home and immediately went into his study and closed the door. He hadn't been home in weeks but he hasn't said anything to her. He stays in his office for a couple of days and she eventually finds out why. "Burr shoots founding father" is the headline of the paper.
Eliza writes to her and asks her to come stay with her. It's too quiet in her house. She has Angelica but she needs Theo. So Theodosia makes the trip upstate. Eliza has lost 2 major members of her family in the past few years.
Theo stays there for a week or so but then returns to her father. He can't speak. He remains like that for weeks. She takes care of him. But one day she wakes up and he's gone. His dresser is empty and the important papers are gone from his office. He's completely forgotten about her.
She's now lost all of the important people in her life. Her mother died. Philip died right in front of her. She could've saved him. And now her father has left. She has no one left. No one of importance in her life.
Theodosia's depression came back. Worse. So. Much. Worse. She see's no point in anything anymore.
So she writes 3 letters. One to her father.
Telling him how much she loves him and wishing him well in his political pursuits. She writes one to Eliza.
Telling her how much she helped her through her mother's death and how much of a mother she was to her after that. The last one she writes to Philip.
She tells him everything that has happened since he left. She tells him about how much she loves him and how much she misses him. The bottom bit of the letter gets a little hard to read, however. She writes about how sorry she is that he didn't get to have a family on earth. She writes how she hopes he has made a family for himself in his afterlife. Then she apologizes for the messy letter but tells him that it's okay if he can't read it. She tells Philip that she can't wait to see him again. She apologizes for the blood and tells him to wait for her.
