Chapter 20
Group Dynamics
There is a knock at the back entrance of the pub first thing Tuesday morning and when I open the door I come face to face with a smiling Chunk. It's the first time in ages I've seen him in his greengrocer uniform instead of his modern teddy boy style.
"Happy Delivery Day!" he says, handing me a clipboard to sign. "You know what to do."
"Sign by the top X, print by the bottom X!" I sing-song as I scribble my signature. We go through the same routine every time he delivers us stock. I'm not sure why. Today there is something oddly reassuring about the familiarity of it.
He gives me a little grin. "How's everything going? You still feeling like a ravenous Cookie Monster?"
I giggle as I think back to our crazy Facebook picture war. "Oh my gosh, that was soooo funny! That dancing doughnut cracked me up!"
Chunk runs a hand through his hair and poses. "I think the resemblance was uncanny."
"Oh, most definitely!"
I can hear footsteps in the corridor behind us as we talk. Mum appears behind me, grabbing hold of Chunk's mini forklift of delivery crates. "I thought I heard the van pulling up outside! Thanks for these love, I'll just put them in the cellar."
Chunk immediately wrestles the forklift from her grip. "No, no Mrs. Apple, don't you go lifting them! These are heavy, I'll shift them for you."
"Don't hurt your back," I call out after him.
He simply laughs in return as he wheels the large quantities of fruit and veg down our cellar ramp without even breaking a sweat. Chunk lifts heavy crates day in, day out at work out so I guess our modest delivery is child's play for him. It's enough for us in our little kitchen though. And it's enough to cause an injury if you don't lift it the right way.
"Right, I've popped them in the corner," he announces, racing back up to the hallway. "Anything else I can do for you ladies while I'm here? Any other boxes to shift? Stuff to fix? Perhaps some light plumbing work?"
My Mum, embarrassingly, hoots with laughter. "Ooh, I like you. Can you stay and do my washing?"
I glare at her. "He's just kidding, Mum."
She holds her hands up at me. "Ooh, OK, OK! I wasn't being serious! I'll just go and check the delivery off, I know my place."
I watch her shuffle away into the cellar and let out a sigh. "I think parents are literally put on earth to show up their kids at any given opportunity."
"Hey, I would have done the washing," Chunk replies with a cheeky grin. "It's pretty boring in the shop today so it would have made a welcome distraction."
