Genevieve, Meg, and Jay walked as a trio through the park, laughing at one of their stupid puns and eating overpriced ice cream when Meg suddenly stopped them and moved them to the grass. It was almost evening and the sun was slowly turning orange, setting a warm hue over them.
"So," She started with a teasing smile on her face. Not now, Gen thought. "You and Aidan, huh?"
Gen rolled her eyes into another dimension and huffed. "Nothing is happening. Nothing happened."
Jay snorted. "Sure, Clarke. Whatever you say." Which made Gen glare at him and he continued to eat his ice cream happily.
"Okay, okay." Meg put her hand on Gen's shoulder. "Even if nothing did happen - which is a big if -, why was he in your room? On your bed? And why were you about to smother him with your pillow?"
Jay burst out laughing, and repeating everything Meg said as a statement. "Oh, Genevieve, Genevieve, Genevieve. You sure know how to get a guy, you feisty vixen, you!"
Gen groaned loudly and punched Jay on the shoulder, making him yelp and rub his arm. "He was in my room because after the party last night, he dropped me off. He probably fell asleep on the chair or something." She finished off her ice cream and shivered at the sudden cool breeze. I just love this weather, she thought sarcastically. She hated fall. It wasn't sure of itself since it was either too hot or too cold and she'd always wear the wrong clothing.
"And? We asked more than one question, you walnut."
She huffed and continued. "He was on my bed because we were arguing and he sat on my bed? I don't know? What else would he be doing- Actually, don't answer that." She pursed her lips when they both snickered. "And I was about to hit him, not smother him, because he was annoying! He ate my cereal, and was his usual annoying self." She listed off.
Jay started poking her arm and wiggling his eyebrows like an idiot, his voice high pitched in his oh so teasing way. "Hit him with your love spell, you mean."
Gen finished her ice cream and laid back on the grass. "You know what? I'm done with both of you." She said before sighing exasperatedly. They stopped bantering and they sat in silence, with Jay not letting go of his lowkey teasing and still muttering nicknames to himself.
Meg and Jay, at some point, ended up laying on the grass next to her. "Are you ever gonna date anyone?" Meg questioned.
Gen thought about it for a moment. She didn't really think about whether or not she even cared about dating. Hell, she struggled prioritising school; how the hell can she prioritise someone else? "I don't really know?" She said, sounding like she just asked a question.
"Why not?" Jay piped in.
"Well, it's never really crossed my mind 'til just now, I guess?" The sky wasn't really that bright today - it was actually pretty dull and dreary. Gosh, how positive. "Maybe if someone asked me out then I would say yes? I don't know! I'm not very social unless it's in a place I'm comfortable in, in case you couldn't tell!" She mused, sounding sarcastic towards the end.
Both of them turned quickly to face her, making her feel like a child about to be scolded. "So you're saying you're comfortable in a god damn jail cell?" Meg snapped, left arm swinging in the air in reprimand. Gen made a face of 'i guess so' and shrugged her shoulders.
"What if Aidan asked you out?" Jay asked quietly, smirking at Gen, challenging her.
She cringed internally at herself and was glad she had brown skin because if she were white and pale, she'd be redder than a tomato. "I'd say no." She challenged Jay back, lying straight through her teeth. Although, she wasn't really sure if she'd say yes or no.
"Why not?" They both asked at the same time.
"Because," she started loudly. "I don't wanna date anyone this year. I wanna make a few more friends, hopefully. If you're nice, you make new friends. Not that you guys aren't enough because you're both too much to handle individually but you know what I mean. right?"
"Yeah, I feel 'ya." Jay said, playing with the front of his brown hair.
Meg stretched her arms out and folded them behind her head. "So... You just wanna be friends with Aidan?" She asked, eyes glancing to the side to look at her.
"Yeah, exactly." She said, kinda disappointed but she didn't really know why. It was most likely the fact that yeah, she did need a few more friends, but she wasn't really sure if she wanted more. Whatever. "Me and Aid are nothing more than sort-of friends." She smiled a bit.
Jay snickered and made weird suspicious like sounds. "You and Aid are on nickname basis now, huh?" He asked, emphasising on the nickname.
She rolled her eyes and laughed, sitting up. "I'm done. I'm leaving." She said dramatically, picking up her bag and standing up.
"What? Actually?" Jay laughed, throwing a small pebble from the ground at her.
"Yeah. Actually. I know I always sound sarcastic but, damn. I do mean things sometimes." She tucked her hair behind her ear. "It's almost dark out, guys. I gotta go home and actually sleep for once."
They responded with whines and a bunch of complains.
"Genevieve! What about us?" Meg cried out, sitting up with Jay following suit.
She was already stepping backwards as she spoke. "You can both gossip about whatever? Oh, Meg, you should update Jay on your girlfriend issues. Bye!" She laughed and walked away.
Her friends had a thing. They've had it for a while but neither of them had acted upon it. Meg has a girlfriend, Jay has his flings, but they never really stopped liking each other. She didn't really mind since it was their business but she wasn't against a small nudge or two from her direction.

That evening, she laid in bed and turned for the millionth time. The cool evening air coming in from her window and reaching her skin but she still felt sweaty and uncomfortable. She felt restless and like she wanted to take her antsy-ness out, she'd rip it out if she could. A million things kept on rolling in her head and, okay, she may or may not have had random snippets of the past few days. Particularly the ones involving Bellamy. God, she hated feeling like a little schoolgirl with a crush. She rolled over to the side of her bed and looked at the clock. It was 2:55 am.
Kill me now. She thought, groaning out loud. A thought creeped into her head, like a fog. Covering the thoughts of a crush and friends. A thought that usually crept in when she was sleepless, agitated. It would be morning in a few hours and her mother still wouldn't be home.
Bad habits are hard to get rid of and her mother fell back into one of them. Drinking was something she stopped after Gen was born but took it up again recently. It's not that she was a violent or overly emotional drunk; It was that she couldn't hide the fact that she looked at Gen with shame. With lack of care.
She ended up trudging to the kitchen and drinking hot chocolate to ease her nerves and let her sleep. The minute she laid back down on her bed, she welcomed an empty sleep.
