On this night, the starless sky was lamented black. The somber hues of an ominous, dark forest were illuminated under the emerging face of the full moon. The moss-veiled trail I was on snaked through the care worn forest. Every once in a while I would hear leaves rustle or a branch snap. Yet, every time I turned around I didn't see anything. Maybe it my imagination? My mind playing sick tricks on me? Then came sudden BOOM!

"THERE SHE IS! GRAB HER!" Voices yelled left to right. Growls began to fill the air.

I pushed through the leaves with no hesitation. I didn't bother looking behind. I could hear them. Their footsteps. Their heavy breathing. All I could think of was that they were chasing me...and catching up. I stumbled over a tree root and my pants ripped up the side all the way to my upper thigh.

It feels like I've been running for hours though it's only been a few minutes. These woods seem to be endless. My legs ached slightly. A branch hit me in the face and I scream. I fell to the ground, hitting my back on a log making me loose my breath. I gasped for air, but nothing came in.

"You can't run forever!" a raspy voice shouted. They weren't that far behind anymore.

I swallowed and got up. I glance around in all directions. Where can I go? Everything looked the same. I shook my head. Every second I wasted, they would get closer. I dashed to my right without thinking. Tears streamed down my face. I swerved in and out of the trees and bushes. This isn't going to end is it? A tree root snatched at my ankle and I heard a snap. I fell to the ground once again, except this time I screamed in pain. I tried to get up, but a sharp pain shots up my leg causing me to whimper in pain. I fell back to the ground. This is it. All my training going to waste just because a stupid broken ankle. Fighting through the pain I stood up with a grimace. I stumbled a little so I leaned on a tree for support.

A tree. Great idea Akiva! I began pulling myself up the tree. Once to the top I sat on a thick branch big enough to hold all my weight. I layed on my stomach glancing down at the scene. Not even a minute later, a group of 5 to 7 guys grew to a stop under the tree I was on.

"Where did she go? Her scent stops here." A well-built man with dark shaggy hair shouted.

"What makes you think I know Max? Do I look like a I can see the future? I don't know where the hell she is. So stop asking me questions I don't know the anwser to." Another man yelled. He stood with authority as if he was the leader of the group.

"Damn it! Maverick is gonna kill us!" the leader shouted making everyone flinch.

"We are part of the royal guard and we can't even find a simple human."

Human? Question floated in and out of my brain, but one was catching my attention. Who is Maverick?
