"Ouch!" Leaning against the passage wall. I bite my lip to stop any rude words coming out as I retrieve the small piece of lego from beneath my feet. At three years old I think Dominic is way too young to have lego but his dad insists on spoiling him with toys to make up for his lack of involvement in his life. It's something me and Jacques argue about every couple of weeks. Dominic has way too many toys that he plays with once, discards to the side and finds an old cardboard box that keeps him entertained for hours. And all the toys in the world doesn't stop Dominic crying when his dad stands him up to go out with the boys instead of taking him for the weekend.

And when Dominic destroys the miniature lego house that he and his father built one rainy evening I am the one who picks up all the pieces and puts it all back together. Placing bricks back in the particular order they had been layed so meticulously you can barely notice the cracks in the smooth plastic.

I was half way out the front door on my way to drop Dominic to nursery before heading to work when the house phone started to ring. Checking my watch I ignored it and locked the front door. If it was important they can leave a message.

After strapping Dominic securely into his car seat I pull out of the car park. I drove along the motorway with the radio set on Capital FM singing along, glancing every now and again at Dominic snoozing in the back seat.

As I stopped at a traffic light my phone started ringing. Glancing at the Caller ID I sighed. I pressed the bluetooth button so I could hear the conversation over the speakers.

"Morning Taura!" Jacques's voice sang through the speakers. Dominic stirred slightly in his sleep.

"What do you want Jake? I'm dropping Dom to nursery. " I snap slightly irritated at the disturbance of my morning sing along.

"Can't a guy just call to check up on my favourite baby mother?"

"I'm your ONLY baby mother. I hope. And you only call to check up when you want something. "

There was a silence as he mulled over what I had just said.

"Well what is it now Jake? That Beatrix finally dumped your sorry ass?" I chuckle as I remember Jacques most recent girlfriend. She was a lovely girl what she's doing with a guy like Jacques puzzles me. She could do so much better.

"Weell... sorry to disappoint you but we're still together. We...uh actually planning going on a 2 week holiday to Barbados in a couple months."

"Congratulations. Let me guess you're calling to ask to be relieved of your nonexistent fatherly duties while you're away?"

"Uh actually no. You see... I mean it's ok if you say no... I mean it was just a thought. ..it was Bea's idea..."

"Spit it out Jake... I haven't got all day."

By this time I was parked outside Tiny Tots Nursery and had woken Dominic.
"We thought maybe Dominic could come to Barbados with us."
