The Locked Box

I steered Cupid towards a grassy patch of the pasture that didn't look overgrown with weeds or poisonous flowers. Most of the fencing was intact, some of it needed replacing. Most of the problems with the pasture are the overgrown weeds and grass that was so tall it could have snakes hidden in it.

I guided Cupid towards the end of the pasture, where I found some fencing missing near the woods that separated our property from the neighbors. From what Tanner told us the neighbors were peculiar but offered to help babysit every time mom and dad went for classes at the college in the city. They were a quiet and helpful couple with 2 small children the last time he saw them. Mr. and Mrs. Kapra were supposed to come by later in the week to catch up, Tanner had kept in contact with them to check up on our house every now and then.

Cupid and I turned around and headed back towards the house, the barn wasn't ready to be lived in yet so the horses had to stay in their travel stall for another night. I dismounted Cupid and guided him to the stall after he was secured in the stall I made sure they had plenty of food and water before going back in the house.

"How's the pasture, any problems?" Tanner asked me as I walked through the door.

"Some of the fencing is rotted or missing. Most of the problems are just the weeds and tall grass, easy fixes. Are we working on the barn tomorrow, the horses are getting claustrophobic in the travel stall?" I asked him while sitting down on the slightly dusty old couch.

"Kyle-James is going to start working on it in the morning after breakfast. Hopefully, it can be done by tomorrow afternoon and we can start working on the pasture. I've got to see if the old lawn mower still works, hopefully, we don't have to buy a new one." Tanner said leaning forward.

Is the water turned on yet? Id like to get a shower after I finish putting together my bed, I can put my old stuff in the attic or basement tomorrow. I asked standing up and stretching.

"The water is turned on but the electricity wont be turned on until sometime tomorrow so Ill have to go pick something up for breakfast in the morning. Ill stop by the electricity company and ask them what time it should be on." Tanner stood up and ruffled his blonde hair, a habit he's acquired when he's stressed.

I walked up the stairs and down the hall towards my bedroom, only stopping by Kyle-James room to ask him if he needed anything. I walked into my room and towards my suitcase, ready to pick out my clothes for the night before I put my mattress on my bed frame and make my bed with my galaxy bedding.

Gathering my clothes and a towel from the top of my suitcase I walked into the bathroom, stripped and took a much-needed shower. Getting dressed in my harry potter long sleeve t-shirt and pants I braided my long wet hair and looked in the mirror.

My face is dotted with freckles around my nose and cheeks, my blue-green eyes slightly red from being tired, my plump lips slightly red and my cheeks pink from the heat of the shower. I consider myself average looking, I never caught any guys eye in school and I only had a few friends that I was close with.

Dropping the towel in my hamper and exiting my bathroom I walked to my bed and burrowed into my covers, slowly drifting to sleep.

When I woke up the next morning Kyle-James was already hard at work in the barn and Tanner had already gone into town. I quickly got dressed in ripped black jeans with a light blue shirt and boots. I went to check on the horses then to the barn to help Kyle-James clean it out.

The stalls were already cleared of the old hay and Kyle-James had done a good job so far.

"Hey, Kyle, need any help?" I asked walking towards him.
