It is very early in the morning, about 2:47 am. And you can't sleep, no matter how hard you try, the darkness always seems to find it's way in. So you decide to go out into the forest of trees near your house and take a walk until sunrise. You put on your favorite flannel and pair of jeans, with some army boots to top it all off. Your parents are asleep so you have to be very quite while walking down the stairs. Once you've made it to the bottom without waking them up, you tip toe to the back door and step through into your backyard. Once outside you hesitate for a moment, moving the rubber band that you wear on your left wrist a little bit, and then start to head out.
The Ohio night air is crisp and cool, and it is a full moon so you can vaguely see where you are going. You begin to walk and everything is so silent aside from the rustling of small nocturnal animals, and the crunch of your boots on stray branches. The trees form a canopy over your head with small rays of moonlight breaking through the leaves and branches to illuminates stripes of the ground below. Then, all of a sudden, you hear someone talking.
"This is not what you're supposed to see. Please, remember me. I am supposed to be King of a Kingdom or swinging on a swing. Something happened to my imagination. The situation's becoming dire, my tree house is on fire, and for some reason I smell gas on my hands. This is not what I had planned. This is not what I had planned....."
Once the mysterious man finished what he was saying you hear a heavy sigh come from up above you, the same voice, but you think to yourself, "Could this man be in the trees?" And then you see it to your right side, nestled high into the branches of multiple trees....A small tree house, and the voice seemed to be coming from inside.
You walk around the bottom of the center-most tree of the tree house until you find the ladder that leads into it. Coming to a halt right in front of the later you begin to mentally prepare yourself to climb up and into the tree house. Three seconds pass, and then 20, and then a minuet, you waited so long that you had actually been standing there for 10 minuets.
You jump backwards, and fall over when you hear a voice call out, "Excuse me? Could you please leave?" It came from inside the tree house. You look up to see a man peering out of one of the tree house's windows down at you with his arms hanging out of the window as well. The man had a slightly darker skin tone, black hair, and brown eyes. You don't say anything as you two stay staring at each other, and that's when you notice it. A lighter. You are very confused as to why any one would have a lighter on them. Because he clearly wasn't smoking.
You begin to think of what you might say to him but he interrupts your thoughts by saying, "Well, if your not going to leave then you might as well join me." and he disappeared from the window. A few seconds later he was climbing down the ladder and then he was staring you right in the face. "Would you like to come into my tree house?" he says
You have always been taught to run from this kind of situation, but you were so shocked by what was going on that you simply nod in reply. "Well then, come on up," he says.
So you climb the ladder up into the tree house, and when you get inside you stop to look around. The treehouse was lit only by a small lantern in the middle of the floor. And around it were scattered pages of what looked to be song lyrics.
And by the time you come to your senses and glanced over at the man he was already sitting on the floor writing more lyrics with his back against the wall, humming to himself and moving his fingers through the air as if he were playing piano. Finally, after building up the confidence, you say, "So how long have you been coming up here?"
"Ever since I was a little kid," he says
You say, "Oh, cool, so you just come up here and sit?"
He looks you dead in the eye and says, "I sit in silence, and it can get quite violent sometimes.'
You look at him and wonder just how mentally stable he is, but shake the thought away because, after all, you weren't the most mentally stable person either. You then you begin to think, 'maybe we could help each other if we have the same kind of problems, maybe he'll understand me better than anyone ever has. "So what's your name? Mines y/n." you say quietly
He states at you for a few seconds, and then, after realizing what he was doing, hastily said, "Hi, y/n, my name's Tyler.....Tyler Joseph." He rubbed the back of his neck with his left hand, and that's when you noticed it. A rubber band on his left wrist just like yours. You sit next to him and before you could say anything Tyler says, "I noticed the rubber band on your wrist when you came in here, I have one just like it. See?" He shows you his rubber band and you were momentarily shocked. It was as if he had just read your mind. "I know I may be over stepping my boundaries here...but....why do you wear yours?"
You sit there in shock because no one had ever asked you this before, you weren't sure what to say because you didn't know if you could trust this guy with you life...but he seemed like a guy who could understand what you were going through so you decide to go ahead and tell him.
Hesitantly, you say, "It's a stress reliever and it's a kind of impulse control for me. If you get my meaning."
Tyler looks you in the eye and says, "I know exactly what you mean....I have mine for the same reason too, but when I give in to them, I always regret it afterwards when the sun comes up though. But some times the thoughts get too much for me and....well..."
You reply with, "Yeah, that's exactly how it is for me too. Man, I never knew that someone else was struggling with the exact same thing as me...."
Tyler looks off into the distance playing with the lighter you saw him holding onto before. Making the flames dance between his fingers and he says, "y/n, can I ask you something."
You stop for a moment and adjust the rubber band on your wrist and then reply, "sure...?"
Tyler sits on his knees and looks you in the eye and says, "Can I consider you a friend.."
"Definitely!" you say, almost a little too quickly
Tyler is taken aback by how quick you answered, but then he comes to the realization that you had agreed to the idea and says, "I'm sure Josh won't mind..." his eyes open wide as he sees your puzzled face and quickly says, "I mean...uh...I hope you won't mind being my friend y/n."
"uhhhhhh, no I won't." You say, and then in an attempt to recover the awkward situation by saying, "I would really like it too if we became friends. But I should probably start heading home or else my parents might wake up and see that I'm not in my room."
"Okay, I'll see you later y/n. Came we meet up here again tomorrow? Around 7pm?"
"Yeah, that sounds good! See you tomorrow then Tyler."
