24 hours later.

The population index was showing a hundred and thirty two people less.

That is around 3.3% of the initial population.

Assuming there is no fluctuation in this death rate, we have around 30 days before complete wipeout.

At the end of the last day even if we are the last ones alive we have to endure another 9 months to be sure that the undead are all dust before stepping out.

9 months without resources or any connection to the outside world.

The last 24 hours was like expected. Bad news, bad news and more bad news.

More smoke and fire. Occasional gunshots. Another UNA call asking civilians to stay calm.

We had several calls from friends and we traded rumors about what happened. How the breach happened. Or about containment. But mostly just words of courage and hope.

No, we didn't go out. That is one of the first in the list of 'Do nots' in Code Z protocol.

Yes we were taught how to respond if the colony is infiltrated. Each one of us were thoroughly trained for this exact situation. Last thing they want is everyone to run around the street plundering the shops and destroying any chance for the colony's recovery. And not to mention the significant increase in the odds of being devoured.

Nothings more sickening to me than those hollow words. Words that are supposed to make me or Jesse feel better. But they are just reassuring themselves.

It's as if repeating a lie again and again will make it true. They are all in denial. Like children.

The baby monitor crackled to life. Jane was apparently cackling with laughter. Creepy.

I entered the bedroom and went to the crib.

There she was, laughing at the wall were a poster of ACDC was hung.

The world is burning down one day at a time and here she is my little bundle of joy laughing at God-knows-what without any damned care in the world.

I took her in my arms and could not help but smile. It feels odd. It's the first time in the last 24 hours that I have smiled.

Just about then the lights went out.

No the world has not come to an end. Not yet.

It's just a power outage.
