(Author's note: I'm trying to name all of the chapter titles after soundtrack titles. If you think that a different song title would be better suited for a chapter, tell me and I will consider it.)
What. The. Hell. Is. Happening? First a talking flower, and now this? A giant, humanoid goat was standing in front of you. You couldn't help but gape.
"Well? Don't just stare." Toriel barked.
"What are you?" You asked.
"Are all humans this stupid?" Toriel snapped, " I'm obviously a monster, and you are obviously an idiot. Hah, you won't live past the first puzzle on your own."
"Puzzle?"
"Unless you want to be trapped in a room forever, yes. Move to the next room."
You looked up into her eyes and quickly wished you hadn't. Her eyes were red, and the whites were yellow. She had a red glow under her eyes that sent shivers down your spine. A look of disgust flashed onto her face.
"Child, did you hear me? NEXT. ROOM."
She seemed to grow even taller and you quickly scampered through a big, red door with a whimper.
"Ok. This is your first puzzle."
You looked towards her, expecting some kind of explanation. Obviously not, as she simply stood in the corner, waiting.
So you tried the puzzle. There were 6 buttons on the ground, left, middle, right. You weren't sure what to do, so you hesitantly placed a foot on the bottom middle tile. Immediately, spikes shot up through the tile, nearly going through your leg. Luckily you had good reflexes. It simply grazed your leg, and you cried out.
"CHILD. ARE YOU BLIND? READ THE SIGN." Toriel shouted.
You mentally facepalmed. Toriel was right. You were pretty dumb. You walked over and read it.
"The weak will not proceed. Strong ones, clever ones. Both walk not the middle road."
It was so obvious now. You walked on the four tiles on the outside and did not receive a spike this time.
"Finally," Toriel groaned, bored, " I thought you would NEVER solve it."
Despite what she said, Toriel seemed like she was proud of you, her eyes softening a little.
"Let's go to the next room."
She grabbed your hand roughly, and pulled you to the next room.
The room had 3 levers, two of which seemed to have broken off due to aggressive overuse. The third one didn't look like it even worked.
"Hmm. Seems as if this puzzle is broken." Toriel said softly. " Never mind that."
She summoned fire in her hand, and you flinched away. It was really hot! She threw a couple balls at the spikes at the end of the room, melting the tips down and making it safe to cross, as long as you didn't touch the superheated metal.
She tugged you through the next door and you came face to face with a terrifying, huge... dummy. Hey, it had a scary scowl! (Don't judge me).
"Ok, child. As a human traveling through the underground, monsters WILL try to kill you. You must be prepared for this situation. When you encounter a monster, you will enter a fight. When you are in a fight, attack as strongly as possible. Go ahead, attack this dummy." Toriel smiled cruelly.
You didn't want to attack the dummy. You didn't see why you had to. It was just a sack of stuffing. You told it you didn't want to fight. The dummy didn't respond. Toriel seemed upset with you.
" You stupid child! What do you think you will accomplish with peace?!" Toriel sighed, " Oh well, at least this time it was just a dummy. Next time it won't be."
You nodded nervously.
Toriel calmed down a little.
She turned silently and moved to the next room, signaling for you to follow.
"There is another puzzle up ahead which I expect you to solve. It may be dangerous so you do have to BE CAREFUL."
She led you down a hallway, hesitantly, as if expecting something. Suddenly, you felt something jerk you to a stop. A red heart appeared in front of your chest, as did... a fighting interface? There were four large buttons, named fight, act, item, and mercy. You looked up to the monster in front of you. It looked like a large frog, but black and with horns and fangs. It's red eyes glared at you with malice.
You didn't particularly want to fight or kill anything, so you pressed the act button, which brought up a menu of its own. Check, compliment, and threaten were the three options you had. You were confused, so you pressed check, stalling for time so Toriel might notice and help. The button flashed green at your touch and a voice whispered in your head, " Froggit: Attack 4, Defense 5. Violence is difficult for this enemy."
Slightly chilled at the voice in your head, you startled at the sudden onslaught from Froggit. Flies came in all directions at you, filling your mouth and nose, choking you, you couldn't breath and- no. That's not true. You fell over at this vision. You felt disoriented. The voice in your head giggled. When did they even appear?
Toriel suddenly came charging over, hands ablaze, and struck the froggit dead. You couldn't help it, but soon you were sobbing. As tears poured down your cheeks, Toriel gave you a bewildered expression.
"Child, this Froggit was going to try and kill you. Why cry at its death?"
You merely shook your head and cried louder. Toriel sighed and grumbled,
"I guess you are in no condition to solve this spike puzzle. I will solve it for you." She grabbed your hand and pulled you in a pattern through the spikes.
"I have to say, I am a bit relieved that I solved this one, it could have been quite dangerous." She quietly admitted.
The next room was a long hallway. You could barely see the end.
"My child, I think you need to travel this passageway yourself. To develop strength and bravery, of course."
At that she turned and SPRINTED down the hallway, until you could no longer see her.
You nervously started down the hallway, expecting something to happen, but surprisingly, it didn't. The whole thing was just unnecessary tension. At the end of the hallway there was nothing but a pillar and a door, and Toriel was no where to be found. It took approximately 2.4 seconds to figure out where she must be, and you peeked behind the pillar. Of course Toriel was there. Toriel left the pillar.
"Good job, my child. I can see that you have enough bravery to withstand the Ruins. I must do some things. You should wait here. You have grown on me and it would be... unpleasant to see you dead. Take this cell phone. I will be back."
