A soft cry broke through the silence of the hospital room, and a dazed smile spread across Mary Salvatore’s face as she relaxed back into the bed pillow. The tiny baby was wrapped up in a blanket and the doctor stopped, as she was about to hand the baby to Mary. The woman was passed out, exhausted. Sweat pasted her forehead. The doctor turned to the two boys standing beside their mother. Their father had yet to arrive, but they could guarantee he was getting here as fast as he could.

“Who wants to hold their sister first?” The doctor smiled kindly. Damon and Stefan both stared, wide-eyed.

“I will.” Damon said after a pause of hesitation. The doctor carefully handed over the crying baby girl to Damon. Damon’s arms instinctively supported his sister’s head up as he smiled down at her. She was gorgeous. As Damon held her, her cries slowed to a stop immediately and her eyes opened to reveal big cute brown irises. Her lips upturned as she stared up at Damon. He let out a small laugh and reluctantly handed the baby to his brother. Stefan held her close to his chest, and she only let out a small whimper at the loss of Damon before she snuggled in her blankets. Stefan and Damon both grinned at each other. It was obvious to all three people in the room, excluding Mary, that the little girl had immediately taken a liking to Damon. Stefan felt no jealousy though, he felt sadness. That sadness had aroused as he watched Damon smiled with pure happiness down at his sister, because Stefan knew that it was only a week until Damon went to war, and Stefan was logical enough to realize Damon may never see his baby sister ever again. Stefan gave back his beautiful little sister to Damon as that thought crushed him. Damon smiled again, laughing softly as the baby smiled up at him, blinking her big brown eyes.

“Mary? Mary!” Guiseppe Salvatore came to a halt as he entered the room, taking in the scene. His eyes first darted to his new baby, but then his eyes went to his wife, who was unconscious. The doctor was already desperately checking her pulse with shaky hands and she silently pled that this mother hadn’t passed away. “Is she okay?!” Mary’s husband shouted with distress as his new daughter started softly crying. It was as if the girl knew the fate of her mother, like she knew Mary wasn’t alive anymore, and she would grow up without a mother. Damon was already rocking his sister, trying to soothe her crying. Her wailing was ear-piercing and heart shattering, because everyone in the room knew what had happened. Stefan had silent tears running down his face and Damon was doing his best to soothe his little sister, while Guiseppe was clutching his wife’s lifeless and limp fingers with desperation. The doctor had backed away and out the room with a sadden expression. Mary Salvatore was dead.

A few days later, the newborn Salvatore had calmed down her crying and was currently in Damon’s arms as most of the townsfolk stood in the cemetery, at Mary’s grave. Guiseppe was staring ahead into nothingness as Stefan was having his finger pulled by baby Salvatore.

Damon had been the one to name his little sister after his mother’s death. His father had been in no state to do such thing and Damon hated to see his sister nameless for too long. Stefan wanted Damon to do it, and Damon was thrilled. He called her Evalin Elizabeth Salvatore. Stefan agreed that it was a beautiful name for their gorgeous baby sister, and Guiseppe hadn’t even registered it yet.

Soon enough, the funeral was over, and Evalin was fast asleep in Damon’s arms as he carried her to her room and put her in her crib. He leaned over and gave her a kiss on the forehead before walking out the room.

It was a week later when Stefan was stuck trying desperately to stop Evalin’s bawling. She missed Damon, and had fussed over every single thing. She was being very incorporative and it was making Stefan frustrated. Whenever Evalin had cried since she was born, Damon would always be able to silent her, but now Damon was gone, and Stefan was stuck with the job. Guiseppe Salvatore had gotten reasonably better, but had been totally ignoring the family and was always out doing things. Stefan only left the house every so often, and when he did he had to bring Evalin. He made sure he only went into town when she was in her best conditions, and not fussing over the loss of Damon.
