Hopefully this stuff is actually useful. I have pictures this time >:).

Okay, Okay. Let's get down to business. I'm sure many of you guys out there have always just been drawing only faces, or face down to shoulder avoiding the difficulty that is the body. Human anatomy seems simple of course, but as always, is terribly difficult.

For this first section I will just be addressing the base of all anatomy based drawings.

The Use of the Base.

The base is what would be called as the "guidelines." Guidelines are used to set positions, and are especially important for all full body or just half body drawings. For the guidelines to be used properly, human anatomy must be properly understood beforehand. Practice sources for this will be addressed further down.

So, I'm sure many of you have seen guidelines before. It pretty much looks like this

Guidelines are essential, however, how does one start with guidelines. I'll be honest, my example is probably NOT the best for a beginner. As I've been drawing with these for so long, this is my "shortcut version" because I know certain aspects of the body by heart.

One thing I have established as essential is the art of drawing proper circles.

What do I mean?

If you cannot draw a somewhat accurate circle quickly then it will be very difficult to do proper anatomy. Shaky circles or a lot of erasing with circles means you don't have enough practice.

The first one is bad as the circles are warped, and unstable. It is obvious a lot of tension must have occurred and focus while drawing it. One thing you need to understand is that sketching is FREE. The second set, It is fine, but to be honest, you would spend too much time one a neat perfect circle. The third is the style I have established as the best. They are not perfect circles, but for the human body it is not usually a perfect circle, but warped circles or oval used to establish joints.

There are multiple rings due to the fact I continued to draw in one go until I got the accurate shape. I did not stop in the middle and all of then were drawn extremely quickly. Freehand guideline circles do not need to be neat. However, not overly messy. To get used to quick sketchy freehand drawing circles, you should definitely practice. Do not press hard with your pencil, never do. get used to a very comfortable pressure, as sketching is your design process. Where everything can be altered and changed, so you should draw freely.

Your guidelines should be done in a way where you are free to change it at any moment. Im sure most of you would not prefer to freehand sketch circles (which you might wanna do). Therefore, I would establish a focus on the drawing of the head. The head ALWAYS, I repeat ALWAYS uses a circle as a base. It is a great place to get used to drawing sketchy circles.

I also advise you to advance your skill on the face and hair while doing this. Reference realistic hair, try all kinds of things with expressions. While you evolve your basic skill of sketching basics, you can also advance your details in the face.

I would establish getting head to shoulders pictures set, before moving on to full body anatomy. Be sure to get used to drawing necks during that time! NEVER just draw the face, always go a little further to practice other elements simultaneously. If you want to practice individual elements, then it is fine to do it exclusively, but try to make it a habit to draw face to shoulder as most of your doodles. If you do, you'll get into the habit, and over time the entire set will improve.

This is all for today! I'm planning on releasing the next section in the next day or two. I'll be going more into how to set up your anatomy with actual lines, as well as the difference in gender guidelines. I will also give you guys a reference link where you can practice your FULL BODY anatomy. ^^
