Snape didn’t get the restful sleep that he had hoped to get. Once again, the nightmare had sneaked its way in to Snape’s head, waking him up during the unbearable hours of the night. They refused to give him any rest. He felt as though he deserved it though. After all, he had been the one that betrayed Lily.
Rumors about Potter being in town were traveling around the school. Knowing Lord Voldemort, who was currently away and addressing the current break in at Gringots, Potter’s doing no doubt, he would want these rumors addressed as quickly as possible. Doing what he knew had to be done; he summoned the teachers and ordered them to gather the students in the Great Hall.
Students filled the room one by one, too scared to even speak. They were rightfully frightened, with there being Death Eaters around the room, keeping things in check. Not one of them spoke a word as Snape stood at the front, watching the frightened students filed in the room in perfect lines. They looked around, knowing something was up, yet not knowing what. From the corner of his eye, Snape could see Professor McGonagall, who looked as distraught and confused as the students did. He didn’t think she would be a problem, but he wasn’t completely sure. The other Death Eaters seemed uneasy about her when they let her out of the Dungeon to continue teaching, and rightfully so because she was a powerful witch. However, she also knew her place.
The last of the students made their way into the Great Hall. Death Eaters closed the doors behind them and nodded to Snape, letting him know that he could start. Snape cleared his throat, causing everyone to immediately look up at him, giving him their full attention, even if they didn’t want to.
“As some of you may already know,” Snape said, his voice loud enough that it carried throughout the room, “there is a rumor going around that Harry Potter has been sighted close by.” He began walking down the middle isle, looking each student in the eye, daring them with his eyes to speak out, to say something against him. “If anyone has any knowledge of his whereabouts I invite them to step forward.” He stopped and looked around, pausing for a moment to let the students think about their answer. “Now.” His voice had a sharp edge to it, letting the students know that he wasn’t fooling around. This was serious.
In order to protect Harry like he had promised, Snape needed to know where Harry was. He couldn’t fulfill his end of the bargain any other way. The room stayed silent as students thought deeply about what Snape had just told them. All of a sudden a wave of voices rose as the boy who lived stepped out from among the crowd. Snape looked at him in shock, unsure what to do.
“It seems that despite your attempts to seal off the castle,” Harry said, his voice rising, “you still have some improvements to make.” With that the doors to the Great Hall burst open and members of the Order walked though. Snape took out his wand and pointed it at Harry, knowing he could buy himself more time if he simply knocked Potter out. However, his plan was shot down when McGonagall stepped in between them, her wand pointed at Snape.
Snape faltered, not wanting to hurt McGonagall. Out of all the teachers in Hogwarts, McGonagall was one of the rare few that he actually liked and had some respect for. However, McGonagall didn’t seem to care at this point as she sent spells towards him, and he deflected them.
He escaped through the window, leaving the scene, and cheering students, behind him.
