David POV

I actually can't believe its Annual Games today. I may be 39 yrs old, soon to be 40 (20th of August) but we still have to enter. But this time, I have to enter my name 39 times. I'm in a poor district, where we dig up coal to help our 'technology'. We have a friendly relationship with District 11 but we don't really... communicate I guess. If i'm gonna tell you about my district, might as well talk about my family.

I have a sister named Julie and she is the oldest. She'd always cook us these food like grits and oatmeal, if lucky enough bread for she had a trading thing with some people. If she finds some useful plants she'll give it to the baker, who'll trade back some warm, fluffy bread.

There was a friend of mine named Simon. He's like a brother with him looking after my mum like it was his. His mum and my dad were best friends but friendship never lasts long. My mum is sick and even though she is still strong, she doesn't try hard especially after the death of... my dad.

My dad was the hero of the district. He knew the dangers of when to push the boundaries or not. Thats when one beautiful afternoon came and thats when he decided to step foot in the forest, which was guarded by these fences. Thats when next minute you know, pieces of him flew everywhere. It was hard to forget but he was brave. He was also a very skilled man, with the trading of the meat such as hogs and squirrels. He would negotiate his goods with the mayor, only to be coming back home with pockets of cash.

I was looking in the mirror, as I remembered that this Annual Games would be special. Instead of one girl and one boy, we can have 2 boys or 2 girls representing our region. It felt more safe to call this a district or a region than home. This is not a home.

Thats when the siren went off, meaning everyone had to go to the market area, which is where the 'pulling out of the names' were held. I looked at my mum and hugged her as I walked out of the door with Julie looking all queasy.

"D-david..." I heard mum stuttered. I quickly ran inside and kneeled down near my mum, holding her hand gently as she is a bit fragile.

"I l-love you. A-and I'm very s-sorry for n-not being t-there for you and y-your sister... a-an-"

"Mum its alright" I smiled.

I hugged her again with her hand pinning a pin of a lion on my blazer.

"It means strong and brave. I want you to have it. Julie has a bird pin, which means that she is gentle and lovely... Good luck son" She kissed me on the cheek, which left me and Julie hurrying down to the location.

Thats when we got down there, only for us to be taking a blood print. Its kind of like giving a ticket in to a show but only it was our blood that was the entry price. Its compulsory anyways.

Thats when the siren went off again, only for us to line up in our ages and stand up perfectly tall without slouching. If you were being lazy, you can end up with no head. I learnt from that from about 12 years ago. A girl wanted to tie up her shoes only for her to get her head shot off. It was a scary moment to experience. Thats when a guy with weird hair and makeup came to the stage with a quirky smile on his face.

"Hello everyone!" He said loudly with pride on the mic.

"The name is Stephen Mulhern and I... shall be your host" He smiled. He took ages to speak his speech, which meant listening to the low development of our mining and the winners of the Games.

"Now! Is the time to withdraw the names! So exciting!" Exclaimed Stephen.

"The first man or woman up on the stage is..." Stephen slowly picked up a piece of paper and opened it up slightly.

"Simon Cowell!" I felt heavy hearted.

"S-simon?" I thought.

I felt dizzy as he got up on the stage, pale faced, sitting down on the seat with a light thud.

"Lets give him a round of applause!" Stephen clapped. No one clapped. Everyone was petrified and relieved that it wasn't them but me? I'm worried. Simon is pretty handy with weapons but he will never kill anyone... or anything in a matter of a fact. I remember I stepped on a bug and he held a funeral for it, calling me an idiot.

It was hard watching my friend up there. He was so uncomfortable with 2 guards sitting right next to him and thats when a hand went up. Stephen looked around and put his hand down in the big, shiny glass of names and pulled one out.

"And the next boy/girl contender is...!"

I held my breath as I hoped it wasn't me but after the reveal of the name, I felt sick.

"Julie Walliams!" Julie looked up and tried not to cry as she walked slowly up to the stage, only for me to do something despicable. I ran over to my sister as she was crying and pushed her back only for my voice to echo throughout the ceremony.

"I, David Walliams, volunteer to be in the 2016 Annual Hunger Games!" Everyone gasped especially Stephen who stuttered upon my last few words.

"Oh... um. Ok well, clap for... David?" I nodded my head as a security took the screaming, crying Julie away to her place, only for me to be partnered up with my friend... who will now be my enemy.

"NO! Not my baby brother!!!" Julie shouted. I start to cry as she said that, giving her a nod gesture. Thats when it got quiet again, where no one clapped. Not even a single person clapped.

Thats when I saw Julie quieten down by pressing her index and middle finger together onto her lips, and raising it up into the sky. Eventually, each individual did the same with Simon coming from behind and whistling a mockingjay song. It meant to symbolise peace and love but right now, death was all I could think about.

Simon and I hugged, much to the crowds surprise because it meant killing my best friend... or even being killed by him. I loved him like a brother and the fact we have to be against each other, it makes my head spins.

"Love you Simon, brother" I whispered.

"Love you t-too David" Simon replied back with tears running down his cheek.

Stephen then excitedly got back to the mic only to shouting out the famous saying.

"Happy Hunger Game! And may the odds....."

"Be ever..." Simon mumbled.

"In your favour" I murmured.
