Lin P.O.V.
A red light engulfed the room as the room began to quake. I was so confused. How did she know Gene? And what is going on? I heard the crash of Mai's tea cup as I saw her holding her head as if this was hurting her. Her nose started to bleed as she started to fall to the floor. I rushed forward and caught her. The quaking stopped and the red light emitting from Mai died down. Her eyes were closed. And her nose was still bleeding. Naru and Gene rushed forward.
"Mai?" I called to her. I was hoping she was alright. In the beginning I had disliked the girl, but I soon began to grow fond of her. She was sweet and kind. I looked at my charges. Gene's eyes flashed with recognition.
"She is the girl who warned me about the kidnapping. I just didn't believe her.... God and she was right." Gene groaned. Naru and I looked at Gene in awe then down at Mai.
"Grab her sketch pad, she was drawing something." I called. Naru got up and grabbed the worn book. I opened it. There were images of horrific scenes of murder. Some of beasts and creatures. Some scenes of beauty. Some of symbols and signs. Then some images of the people of SPR. And some of our old clients. Then they came to a picture of Gene and before that the scene of where he was kidnapped. Suddenly there was a hand yanking the book away and slamming it closed.
"That's private Lin." Mai stated coldly. She then stood up and moved effortlessly towards the kitchen. She grabbed a rag and wet it with hot water. She opened the cupboard and took out a bottle. Aspirin was written on the label. She took two and put the bottle back. She came back with the rag as she wiped the blood away from her nose. She sat down on the couch and looked at the two boys.
"Nice to know that your alive Eugene Davis. You and Oliver must be happy to see each other again." She stated calmly. I could only stare. Naru looked like he had been hit by a train. And Gene looked thoughtful.
"So Mai, care to explain what exactly is going on?" Gene stated calmly. Mai smiled knowingly.
"I am surprised you don't remember me. After all we did spend a lot of time together at the condo in Florida." She was speaking in English. "After my parents died I moved to Japan. Started working with an agency that works with people with my type of skill set. The people I work for work with your father. But he didn't know that. So when he asked for someone who could watch his son. Let's just say my boss was very happy that he had someone like me on his roster. So I watched Gene for awhile. Made sure that he wouldn't get hurt. Until I had one of my visions. Except this one was from the future not the past. I told Gene about the attack but of course he didn't believe me. So when he was kidnapped there was absolutely nothing I could do to stop it. Even though I tried. Lucky for me I put A seal on Gene. Which took away some of my memories. And abilities. Evidently... So all my memories of you and the agency were gone and my powers went dormant. Until I found you Naru. Then the dreams came and the creatures." She states. I can only look at her. She turns to Gene. "Did the seal work?" She asks. Hope clear in her eyes.
"Yes, they couldn't lay a hand on me. They couldn't torture me. I can't believe you were the one who protected me." He stated. Mai laughed.
"Oh trust me, it was even harder for me to remember things when my powers started actively protecting Lin and Naru." That made me stop.
"You protected us? This whole time?" Mai nods slowly.
"How do we know your telling the truth?" Naru asked harshly. I looked at Mai, pain and hurt flashed through her eyes. I knew how she felt about Naru. But the look of pain in her eyes confirmed it completely. She sighed and took her shirt off. The action surprised me at first as I felt my cheeks flush red. I noticed the same reaction from Gene and Naru. But what caught my eyes was the intricate tattoo on her chest.
"Have you already forgotten me that quickly? The promise I made you? Or are you just that heartless?" Mai stated. Her voice was filled with pain. The mark symbolized that they would always look out for each other. The mark appeared on the three teens the day they had made that promise. 10 years ago. Naru could only stare in shock, the girl in front of him was the girl that had mysteriously disappeared from his childhood, so he just stared. And that broke Mai. She pulled her shirt back on covering the mark. She stood up quickly and moved to her desk.
" Of course you forgot. I should have guessed that I wasn't important enough to warrant you to remember. I was a fool who fell into the trap of the narcissistic Davis twins." Her voice shook with unshed tears. She grabbed her jacket and bag, placing her phone, ear buds and sketch pad into the bag quickly. I stared at my two charges willing them to move but they just stood there in shock. Too deep in thought to realize what was happening. She moved to the door and went to open it her body stiff and her form broken. She quickly walked out the door.
"You two are idiots." I said standing up and fallowing her. She started down the stairs, but I quickly got up and followed her.
"Mai wait!" She stiffened. And turned to look at me. "Don't go, please!" I told her as I caught up to her.
"Why not Lin? They don't care! I can't be around them." She cried. I sighed.
"Look why don't we talk at the cafe. And we can talk about anything you want okay?" I asked. She nodded and I sighed. I let her walk ahead of me as I called Naru. Before he could say anything I cut him off.
"Mai and I are going to talk at the cafe, you two idiots just listen to the conversation we are going to have. And don't say anything. You'll be able to hear everything over the phone." And with that I followed Mai into the cafe.
