Chapter 4

Laura made it to the airport, finally at eight thirty. It was nearly an hour and a half drive today; usually it took half an hour, but the Christmas traffic and snow was just hell-bent that morning to make the drive as perilous as possible.

Then the air port, oh god, was absolutely jam-packed. There were too many crying children, loud, obnoxious business men, and nagging wives that never shut their traps. This was why Laura hated the airports and why she hated to travel, but this needed to be done. This was the huge Christmas party that her parents held. Most of the time Bill and her mother didn’t mind if she wasn’t able to make an appearance, however, they begged her to come this year to the party. They said that they had something very important to discuss, but it couldn’t be spoken of over the phone. How could Laura tell them no after all the things that they had done for her?

“All of this torture better be worth it though,” Laura muttered to herself as the child next to her cried for her “dolly”.

The security checks, and the luggage check in and all that other pizzazz took four grueling hours. The boarding took forty minutes, but the weather had progressively gotten worse so, the clearance took a whole hour and a half before they could take off.

During takeoff it was absolutely miserable, even though she rode in first class. Laura had always hated the way that the plane shook so violently that it felt like it and she would fall apart. To be honest it scared her a little.

Once the plain had accented to the proper height, she and the other passengers were more than welcomed to roam around. Discreetly Laura got up, with her cell phone in her hand, and walked into the lavatory. She needed to call her mother and tell her that she would be really late.

After only two rings, her mother chirped into the phone, “Hey baby! How is it going?”

“I have some bad news…” Laura began.

“Oh my God!” Melody exclaimed shocked, “Are you okay has something happened? Do-“

“Mom,” Laura interrupted, “I’m okay, but my flights, due to the weather, have been delayed. I won’t be home till really late tonight or possibly in the ungodly early hours of tomorrow. I will just rent a hotel or something tonight to stay in so that I don’t have to wake you all up.”

Laura’s mom snorted, “Nonsense. We will have someone there to pick you up.”

          “But-“Laura was cut off short.

“No,” Her mom said sternly, “My baby won’t sleep in another chummy place if I can help it.”

“Bye mom,” Laura sighed as she went to hang up, “Love you.”

“Love you too,” Melody crooned into the phone.

Quietly, careful not to draw attention to herself, Laura walked casually back to her seat and closed her eyes to take a nap.

Three hours later she was at Denver, Colorado getting ready to board yet another plane. The searching and check in took only two hours; unlike New York. The boarding took thirty minutes, but once again, to Laura’s annoyance, the weather grew nastier. The clearance took a whole hour longer than it did in New York. The flight itself was the shortest part. It took only an hour to fly from Denver, Colorado to Bozeman, Montana. From there, she would ride in a car for another hour before she finally made it to the house.
