Secrets
Aria’s POV
I was sitting down the plump couch in Hanna Marin’s living room. It was a rainy day—cold and slightly bitter. Hanna’s eyes were rimmed red and raw looking as her boyfriend—Lucas, ran his hand on her back to comfort her. As I told one of my best friends, my ultimate secret.
“Why didn’t you tell us, Aria?” Hanna asked. I shook my head as tears leaked out of my eyes. Hanna looked at me, her blue eyes watery. “Does Spence and Em know about this?”
I shook my head. “Aside from you and Lucas, Mike and Ella and Byron, no one knows.”
Hanna looked at me as if I came from a different planet. “So why’d you tell me?” she asked hoarsely. Lucas rubbed Hanna’s back. “Relax, Hanna…” he said softly. “Aria’s having a hard time to you know.”
I looked at Lucas and smiled at him. “Lucas, please, don’t tell anyone about this, okay?” I said. “You’ll only tell once…” I couldn’t bring myself to say it. Lucas bowed his head as Hanna cried even more.
“Aria, why are you saying that?!” Hanna asked, scolding me. “You’re not going to die, it’s just a joke…” she turned from me to Lucas. “Lucas, tell me Aria’s joking, right?” He didn’t answer.
“Aria, I wish you hadn’t told me because I would never want to watch you…” she couldn’t say it as well.
“Die?” I completed it for her—she broke down again as Lucas wrapped his arms around her for support.
Lucas looked at me and just motioned for me to join them. I hugged both of them, trying and failing not to cry. “The two of you will be with each other forever…I know it…” I whispered to both of them as Hanna sobbed.
“There’s still hope right?” Lucas asked me.
I sat again as Hanna calmed down. “The doctors said that treatments won’t do any good because that’s how it progresses, and I’m not really responding to treatments anymore.” I paused, shuffling my feet. “But Ella and Byron planned for us to go to Iceland next month so that I can get a new treatment there, because they wanted to have me around longer.”
“Iceland?” Hanna repeated. “That’s so far, Aria.”
“I know.” I paused. “But I would never want you to see me…die.”
“Does Ezra know about this?” Lucas asked. I shook my head. I know that Ezra and Lucas were friends that’s why she told Lucas about this. “But you have to promise me that you won’t tell him, okay?”
“I don’t think I can do that, Aria.” He said
“I’m dying, Lucas. Can you fulfill this last wish for me, please?” I paused. “I want to be the one to tell him in my own terms.”
Lucas looked at Hanna. “Do what she says Lucas.” Hanna said.
“Okay…I won’t tell.” He sighed. “Your secret is safe with me.”
“Aria?”
We turned to look at the door and we saw Spencer and Emily crying. They heard. Then we all hugged each other as I told them everything from the beginning.
