I ran as fast as I could, so fast like my life depended on it. My name is Cody and this is my story. My mother, Tasha and I lived in the suburbs of West Virginia. We were very happy until he moved in. His name was Earl, the guy that would change my life forever. My mother met Earl at a nearby beach, a few blocks from our home. The night she got home from their first date, she told me Earl was so handsome and unique, and that they met during twilight at the beach. She started to go on many other dates with him, though she said the first was the best. After about four months, things started to get very serious. First flowers, then chocolates, then I finally got to meet him. The dreamy man my mom fell in love with, was a skinny Caucasian. He was a very tall man who had dirty brown hair and brown eyes. The first time I laid eyes on him was when he was standing in the doorway of my house, I thought he was the pizza guy, but he brought a toy truck, so I knew he couldn't be. He asked me directly and politely if he could come in our house and in my most polite voice I said "Sure." He walked to the living room and sat on our couch, almost like he was in the house before, when I was at school; alone with my mother. That was just weird thinking about it, so I cleared it from my thoughts. The silence in the room got awkward, (which meant a gay baby was born).
So my mother finally said "the reason I brought Earl here, is because I would like to know if he could stay here for a while." I didn't know what to say, because I had just met the man, but as I looked into my mother's eyes, I saw warmth and love within them. She was happy, so I said "Yes." It was about midnight before Earl finally left. It was quiet and I got tired, I said good night to my mom and went to bed.
I woke up by the sound of the Ramones on the radio. They were so amazing and soothing. Now a day's people thought they were old and out of style, but they are wrong! It was six forty five A.M, and the bus picked me up. The day went fast, and as soon as I got on the bus, I was getting off. I walked up the steps to my home, and stood in the doorway. I reached in my back pocket, found my house key and opened the door. Everything was normal at the time, the smell of dinner being made and the sound of chirping birds outside my house's window. I ran to my room, set my book bag on my bed, took off my shoes, and hung my jacket on the back hook of my door. If I didn't I would get yelled at by mom. My stomach grumbled and I knew it was dinnertime. After a minute I walked back out into the living room, and went to sit in my favorite baby blue chair, but it wasn't there. Instead of my chair there was a new black sofa it was very shiny but not what I wanted to see. I went to the kitchen to ask my mom where it was. She was there in the kitchen stirring noodles for dinner. "Mom where is my chair?" I asked curiously.
"Earl brought our old furniture to the dump, and bought new furniture for our house.
"But I didn't want new furniture they were my dad's type of style." I said.
"You should be thankful, that thing was very old."
"How could I be thankful? That was mine and my father bought me that chair."
"Oh...I forgot I'm sorry Cody." I was so angry, I didn't care at the moment, and I ran to my room and slammed the door. What I needed, was the soothing sound of the Ramones. I cranked the radio then fell asleep. I woke to my mother calling my name. "It's about time you woke up, it's time to eat wash your hands, then come down stairs. After I washed my hands I raced to the kitchen but slowed as I saw Earl at the table. I entered the room slowly, and sat at the table, where there was food already in the place I always eat at. After dinner I sat down to read a book that I decided to randomly pick from my bookshelf which resembled a small library. I sat on the new sofa, which was now in place of my favorite baby blue chair that had a footrest. At the moment I felt like giving Earl the silent treatment. My mother and Earl entered the room. They were silent as they sat on the love seat beside me. My mom was the first to speak. This must be another surprise. "Cody, we have to tell you something..." my mother started, my heart skipped a beat. I knew this wasn't going to be good. "I'm pregnant"
I sat there emotionless. I didn't know what to say but "Pregnant?!" I was expecting marriage or maybe someone died, but not pregnant.
"Yes I know it's a shock, but what's done is done, and there's nothing that can change what has happened." Mom said.
Then Earl said, "Were going to be a big happy family". That's not what I wanted, I didn't want another family. My father died when I was six, and I loved him so much, I could never replace him, Earl could never replace him.
Mom said, "I know, a truly happy family."
She surprised me that night; she wanted another family with Earl. But I didn't, she just didn't understand what I was going through and will always go through, as my real father lay dead and I live without him day after day it still hurts. After a moment I said "Yeah" because they were waiting for my response. I think it was in my most believable voice because my mom looked satisfied.
