Emily and I called the girls to the table and had them sit in the right spots, and then we called for Bobby and Jaime. We made all the plates, making sure they were the ones with the sauce that had the crushed up pills in them. We had pills already dissolved in Bobby and Jaime’s cups of water. Everyone sat down and began eating bread. To make it look like we weren’t up to anything, we made salad to show a good meal with good intentions.
We were all waiting eagerly, waiting for them to faint or pass out from exhaustion, but they never did. We got scared thinking we didn’t give them enough of the dosage. Emily and I started giving looks of confusion at each other. What had we done wrong? We used all the pills that were required; we didn’t want to kill them we just wanted to get away. Or could it be that they don’t get affected by the pills? Whatever it was they weren’t going down without a fight, so we would still be leaving tonight, but even later than we thought. They ate everything and drank all their water and still nothing.
We talked as we washed the dishes when they left the room.
“What happened?” she said shocked
“I don’t know, but we are still leaving tonight; no matter what.”
“How, they’ll be awake and we will get caught!” she looked like she was going to cry. I hugged her and told her it was going to be okay, we would escape and I would make sure she and Mia made it home alive. She hugged me tighter unsure if what I was saying was true, I wasn’t even sure if I could keep that promise. We finished the dishes a little after nine and waited till Bobby and Jaime fell asleep. They had to go to work early in the morning so they went to bed at ten thirty. The girls were all tired and we had to keep them up and ready to run, but not until I heard Bobby and Jaime snoring. I got everything we needed and we all gathered in my bathroom to “go over the rules of the game.”
“The first rule of the game is, don’t get caught.” The girls looked at me with excitement; they didn’t really know we were leaving for good and I continued. “The second rule is never stop running until I say stop, then we can catch our breath and camp out, the third and final rule is don’t trust anybody except Emily and I, do you both understand?” they looked at the both of us and said yes. We had them put on their backpacks that were light and Emily and I carried the heavier bags. I started taking the bars off the windows. They all came off with no problem and then I opened the window. One by one I lifted the girls to the window and they climbed out, then I threw the sacks as Emily was outside catching them.
I couldn’t believe this was happening; we were leaving this horrible cabin behind or as I like to say my own personal hell. I jumped up and crawled through the window Emily helped me down. We all jumped into the air thinking it was over, when all of a sudden Bobby and Jaime came out of the cabin’s shed. We all froze with fear, but I wasn’t giving up without a fight; I yelled “RUN” and we were off. I jumped over tree stumps, over rocks and over anything that was in my way. I had to slow down to keep the girls in front of me. When the girls stayed ahead of me, I looked back and noticed Bobby and Jaime weren’t following us. That was weird; they had to be up to something.
Instead of running for the gate like we planned we had to go through the woods, it was a dangerous last minute decision. The girls started to get tired and I was out of breath so I told them we had to stop. I needed to talk to Emily about what we had to do next. I had the girls hide in the bushes as we talked. Emily walked over to me. “Why did you tell them to stop?” she sounded frightened.
“Don’t you notice something odd?” I looked at her like I was saying come on, really?
“No, it’s quiet that’s all.” She started to look around.
“So you mean you haven’t noticed that they’re not running after us?” I can’t believe she didn’t notice.
“Oh no I didn’t, I just wanted to get as far away from there as I could.
“Yeah we all did, it’s just I think they’re up to something, aren’t you just a bit concerned about that?”
“Of course I am; we need to keep moving.”
“Yeah let’s go, we’ve stayed here too long already.” We told the girls to get up and start moving again, they were very reluctant to move anymore. We had to scare them and told them that we could see Bobby and Jaime, and they were going to catch us. That did it; they began running faster than me. It had just turned twelve, we were all tired and our back and feet hurt; we needed to set up camp. I first began with the tent, it was really easy. All we had to do was take it out and it did the rest. We took out the sleeping bags and pillows and set them down. The girls laid down and I sung them to sleep.
When I came out of the tent I hung the food in a nearby tree, so it wouldn’t attract any wild animals. I was glad I had my watch; it would be helpful to know what time it was and when Emily and I would take our turns for the overnight watch.
I volunteered to go first even though it was cold out. I really wanted to start a fire, but that would reveal where we were, and Bobby was obviously playing a game with us. I had my knife in my hand and listened for any movement in the woods. There was nothing during my turn, the only thing there was were a few rabbits, squirrels and some deer; I let them be. I was on my guard all night and hadn’t paid attention to the time when all of a sudden a hand touched my shoulder. I jumped and went to yell when Emily came into view.
“I’m sorry did I startle you?”
“Yes you did, next time we do this say my name before touching you, I could have hurt you.”
“Ok I will, I promise, but it’s my turn to watch and your turn to sleep.”
“Yeah okay, wake me if you hear or see anything.”
“I will goodnight.”
“Good night.”
I went into the tent and saw the girls sleeping, it made me tired and I laid down. I was sleeping peacefully for a little while, and then all of a sudden I drifted into a nightmare.
