Fifteen

I woke up the morning after not feeling very different, but I knew somehow that something had changed about my life.  I looked to my right to see my new backpack and realized that it was the first day of my freshman year of high school, and that maybe today would be like in the musicals with lots of clubs and strict teachers and lots of new friends.

After getting to school, I met a girl who was a senior, and she said, "You think you'll be a big deal, huh?"

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"You walk in with the kind of swagger that a very confident girl walks with," she replied.

She led me down the hall, saying, "This year will change your life forever, believe me. Heck, high school will change you forever. I know."

Then she went into song like in the musicals, with no discernible origin to the music, and everyone seemed to be doing choreography to the music.

She sang lightly to me:

"You take a deep breath and you walk through the doors,/ It's the morning of your very first day./ You say hi to your friends you ain't seen in a while/ Try and stay out of everybody's way./ It's your freshman year and you're gonna be here/ For the next four years in this town,/ Hoping one of those senior boys will wink at you and say/ "You know, I haven't seen you around before"/ 'Cause when you're fifteen and somebody tells you they love you,/ You're gonna believe them./ And when you're fifteen feeling like there's nothing to figure out but/ count to ten, take it in./ This is life before you know who you're gonna be,/ Fifteen./ You sit in class next to redheaded Abigail/ And soon enough you're best friends,/ Laughing at the other girls who think they're so cool,/ We'll be outta here as soon as we can./ And then you're on your very first date and he's got a car,/ And you feeling like flying!/ And your mama's waiting up and you're thinking he's the one,/ And you're dancing 'round your room when the night ends,/ When the night ends./ 'Cause when you're fifteen and somebody tells you they love you,/ You're gonna believe them,/ And when you're fifteen and your first kiss/ Makes your head spin around,/ But in your life you'll do things greater than/ Dating the boy on the football team./ I didn't know it at fifteen./ Take a deep breath girl./ Take a deep breath as you walk through the doors."

I noticed that she was guiding me on a pantomimic journey through her high school life. It was awfully sad, and I almost felt sorry for her. Then I noticed how she held herself up with dignity and grace, not caring what others thought of her. I then began to admire her.

Then she did the oddest thing. She asked me, "Was that a musical number? What just happened? Where did that music come from?"

That was when I remembered the potion and the wish I asked it to grant. It didn't just turn my life to be like a musical with me as the protagonist: it had made my  life a musical with songs actually  in the mix! I was so nervous and unsure of myself in that instant. I immediately ran to my first class of the day and found a seat in the back corner of the room.

A girl with long red hair, blue eyes, and pale skin walked in and sat next to me. She looked at me like someone who was newish and just wanted to make a friend.

"Hey, you know that class doesn't start for about thirty minutes, right?" she asked me.

"Yeah, I do, I'm just -"

"Nervous? Same. My name's Abagail. What's yours?"

"Maria Solletto."

"I think you and I are going to be good friends, Maria."

"You think so?" I wasn't sure about if she discovered that I had a new ability for having literal musical numbers that everyone was only aware of after they happened.

"Definitely."

"Before we become friends, we need to get something straight. I ran in here because I accidentally caused a spontaneous musical number in the hallway. I can't fully understand it, but-"

"Hey, don't sweat it. I think that's awesome! I heard the music from in here! I thought something weird was going on. Now I know!"

"You don't think I'm  weird or lame or anything like that?"

"Definitely not! I think you're the coolest girl ever!"

I then began to believe that we would become best friends.
