It had been 28 years since I had met him.
28 years since my life had changed for the better."O-oh! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!"
The girl bent down to pick up the papers that she had caused the boy to drop. As she frantically gathered up the scattered paperwork, she was interrupted by the boy speaking to her.
"Hey, it's okay," he had said. "They're just papers. They can be reprinted." He bent down to help her clean them up.
Once the papers were back in a neat stack and in the boy's arms, she finally got the chance to see what he looked like.
He had an unruly mop of firey red hair, and some of the softest brown eyes she had ever seen. His voice was confident and yet shy at the same time, as if he couldn't decide whether the words he spoke were the correct words to say or not. Something about him seemed a little off - the way he spoke, the way he walked, the way he moved. It made him seem a bit queer.
He extended his hand out to her in greeting. "I'm Soren," he said.I sighed as I remembered the good times that we had back then. I was never the same after I met him, almost as if I was a puzzle and he was a missing piece.
"Y/N!" he shouted out, scanning the crowd for the girl.
"I'm right here!" she called back, waving her arms in the air to signal where she was.
He pushed his way through the multitude of people, slowly but surely moving towards the girl.
"There you are," she said when he finally reached her. "Shall we?"
"We shall," he replied, taking the girl's hand and walking towards the entrance of the restaurant.I looked over to him. He was peacefully sleeping beside me in the bed that we called our own. I could hear him snoring. It made me feel safe, knowing that he was right here with me whether he was awake or not.
His heart was in overdrive. He wiped his hands on his pants in an attempt to get rid of the clamminess once more. His knees felt shaky. He reached his hand into his pocket and fingered the small box containing the ring he ever so carefully crafted himself.
Today was the day that he would propose to his girlfriend of five years, Y/N L/N.
"Soren!" she called out, catching his attention. He looked up and saw her walking towards him with a huge grin on her face, the grin that made his heart melt every time he saw it.
"What are you waiting for?" she asked. "Let's go!"
She grabbed his hand and began to pull him along with her, but he stopped her.
"Y/N?" he said, grabbing her attention. His heart was beating so hard he was pretty sure she could hear it, and he was vaguely aware of every detail around them.
"I've loved you ever since I met you," he said, taking her hands into his. "Ever since we first touched, I knew that you were the one. You brought color into my black and white world. Life into an otherwise barren landscape of nothingness.
"Five years ago, I asked you to be my girlfriend. When you accepted, I felt like the luckiest person in the world. I never wanted to let you go. We've been together through thick and thin, you've loved me through my darkest times, the times I thought you would most definitely want to leave me. I don't want to just be girlfriend and boyfriend anymore. I...I want to let it blossom into something more." He dropped to one knee and reached into his pocket to pull out the box. "I guess what I'm saying is...will you marry me, Y/N?"
Her eyes filled with tears - not of sadness, but of joy. "I...Yes," she said. "Yes, Soren, yes!"
He slipped the ring onto her finger and they embraced, sharing a tender kiss as onlookers applauded. It's been 20 years since that day. We've been married for 20 years. And I've never been happier.
I snuggled up in his arms, preparing myself to fall asleep. "I love you," I whispered, not expecting a response.
To my surprise, I felt his arms tighten around me, wrapping me in a warm, protective embrace.
"I love you too."
