Part 4

HOT Mess

"How was school Aidan?" His Aunt, Veronica asked as she dried her hands on a dish towel. Aidan leaned on the counter next to the stove. He watched her as she stirred a pot of veggies and chicken before locking her hazel eyes on him. "Well?"

"Oh, Auntie, it was great." He grabbed a piece of fruit from a bowl that was freshly cut and teased it with his teeth.

She shook her head. "No trouble?"

"Why'd you expect that?" He smiled.

"Because trouble runs in your dad's genes." She spoke in an ill-manner.

To tell you the truth she honestly hated Aidan's dad and he knew it.

"Well, I'm not my dad." He frowned as he tossed the nibbled fruit in the garbage. She sighed. "Aidan, I just cut those up for dessert and here you go throwing it away. Such a troubled child." She was annoyed and it came out in her voice.

Aidan rolled his eyes. "I didn't come down stairs to fight Auntie, I want to ask if I can go out this Saturday with a few friends."

His Aunt looked at him with a hint of anger clouding her eyes. "You just moved her for goodness sakes! New friends? I bet they're trouble!" She scolded and stirred the pot harder.

"No they're not like that. They're innocent, trust me and it's just a small get together. I came here to start a better life right?"

"You came here to get your act straight because of that drunk driving incident."

"Well maybe it wouldn't have happened if your sister and my dad didn't fight so much!" He shouted.

"Oh, don't give me excuses and my sister?" She pointed to herself. "Don't you mean your mother?"

"She sure has funny mothering skills because she hasn't been in my life for the past seventeen years and suddenly she pops up wanting to interfere with my life." Aidan divulged with a sick feeling floating in the pit of his stomach.

"Because your dad lets you do whatever you like! That's why you're here with me! And I don't care how much you hate me or your mother! Deal with it!" She yelled in his face before turning the stove off and burhsing past him to cut more fruits.

Aidan balled his hands up in a tight fist and turned around to stand beside his Aunt again.

"I don't hate you." He mumbled. "I don't hate mom either." He turned around and headed for the stairs.

Veronica stood there thinking to herself and cutting up fruits. She slammed the knife down and dumped the diced pears and apples into a bowl before shoving it in the fridge. She finished dinner with her nephew on her mind.

Aidan was disturbed from a horrid sleep when his Aunt knocked on the door. "Come in." He groaned from under the three pillows which seemed like millions. She opened the door and walked inside.

"Dinner's ready..." She informed.

"Not hungry." He replied.

She started to leave but she stood her ground. She cleared her throat. "Aidan, I'd love it if you came and ate with me or you can just come and watch me eat, which ever one but I want you down stairs."

He groaned inwardly before popping his head from under the pillows and dragging himself from the bed. He ambled past her and down the stairs as she followed behind him.

She took her seat across from him and started to eat. Aidan stared at the white rice and chicken and veggies. He was determined to make it disappear.

"Aidan." His Aunt said his name with ease in her voice.

"What?" He stared up at her.

"You can go to whatever you're going to on Saturday." She fanned the air before shoving the fork in her mouth.

He smiled and she raised a finger. "But, no drinking and driving, you're only allowed one beer because I know that this isn't some get together, you're going to some club with fake I.D's." She spoke as if reading his mind.

"What?" He asked in disbelief.

"I was young too you know." She sighed. "And I don't hate your dad, it may seem like it because I always talk badly of him but I don't want you ending up like him. My sister was young and stupid and he took advantage of that and got her pregnant and my sister was too young to care for you although she loves you very well but she had to get herself together. That's why she hasn't been there these seventeen years. I hope you understand."

"I get it." Aidan assured. "Trust and believe Auntie I am 100 times better then daddy-o."

"Yes, I hope so." She sipped from her tea. "Also when you go to this..club make sure you don't follow no strange geezer, ew. And don't put your drink down." She pointed her fork at him.

"I won't." He cast her a charming grin. "Have I ever told you how much I loved you Auntie?"

"Yes, many times, now show me how much you love my food and start eating." She rolled her eyes and they ate in silence.
