Detention is boring; sitting silently and mostly still for an hour was one of the dullest tasks imaginable in Nezumi's mind. Sure, he could do it if it involved reading but this wasn't for reading, it was a punishment for something he thought wasn't even a bad thing.
Fighting is an inherently bad thing and no one should do it, but at least it's better than using curses and hexes on each other. Being good at spells was a matter of remembering them, being able to remember the hand movements and being able to remember what all of them did.
He could do that effortlessly, but nothing spoke more pure hatred than actually beating the crap out of someone for insulting one of his friends or someone who actually hadn't done anything wrong at all.
It was a demeaning punishment that he detested with everything in side of him - it was unreasonable and just plain stupid. It wasn't actually punishing them, it was just saying "you did a bad thing, here's your free time taken away". It just took away their leisure time, it didn't actually explain what they had done wrong or any way to correct it.
Nezumi sat in the detention room at the back, waiting for the teacher to actually show up to his detention. There was only a handful of other students in the room with him; most of them were chatting or talking to each other, as there was nothing actually better to do, and people usually just got detentions with their friends.
The classroom door opened and a boy walked in. His hair was white, an event that Nezumi remembered and probably would remember forever. He had been the one to help Shion and actually save him from the bullies that had pursued him and then cursed him. They hadn't spoke much since. There was just occasional glances and smiles in corridors, small talk and deja vus happening extremely rarely but still actually happening.
Shion glanced around the room quickly before he spotted Nezumi. Surprisingly, he bounded over to him, basically grinning at the sight of him.
"Ne-zu-mii!" He said in a sing-song voice, sitting down in the seat beside him. He seemed overtly happy, almost sarcastic with the way he was acting at the sight of his once love-at-first-sight.
"Shion," Nezumi calmly replied.
"It feels as if we haven't spoken to each other in forever."
"It was only a month ago."
Shion ran his hand through his snowy hair, beaming at Nezumi. He seemed to have gone a slight pink colour, but Nezumi refrained from actually commenting on his appearance this time.
"Why are you in detention, Shion? Let me guess, did you get too smart for the teacher and they got annoyed?" Shion was one of the smartest in their year, and probably one of the smartest throughout the school. He excelled in all of his subjects, and was expected to get the highest grades possible on his O.W.L.s.
He seemed cuter than what he was in their first year, when Nezumi and he had started talking. They drifted apart though, Safu getting in the middle of them. When they were younger, he was only a boyish cute, and he brushed off their kiss on Nezumi's androgyny - he claimed he only liked him because he looked like a girl. Everyone knew that it was a plain lie from the beginning.
Now, Shion was cute and from some angles, Nezumi could go as far to say that he was hot. His fair hair and violet eyes, the long 'snake' that seemed to coil around his full body. Nezumi couldn't help sneaking glances at him in the middle of classes and in the hallways - he had always seemed to have a little crush on Shion.
Shion's hand appeared in front of Nezumi's face, waving back and forth rapidly. He pulled Nezumi out of his daydream about him, and both were Nezumi's favourite things - the idea of Shion and actually looking at Shion and being with him, in the warmth and safety of his company.
"You awake?" Shion giggled lightly at Nezumi, his lips curling into a tiny smile. Nezumi blushed, his normally pale cheeks tinting a rose colour.
"Sorry," he murmured. "I'm in detention because I forgot to hand in my Herbology homework. I had finished it, if course, but I had left it in the dorms so I couldn't hand it in. I told you two minutes ago, but you went off into a daze. It was kinda cute..." Shion let himself trail off, only realising the awkwardness of the last thing that he had said after the words had left his mouth.
It was Shion's turn to blush this time.
"I'm in because I got in a fight. Well, not exactly a fight. I punched the guy and he punched me back, but the teacher only saw us when I had punched him again and his nose was bleeding. He didn't believe me when I said he was provoking me by being homophobic. It was self defence, so this justice system is unfair and profiting off of homophobia." Nezumi was only half serious in his tiny speech, smirking at Shion when he had finished.
"Its not exactly homophobia and they're not exactly profiting off of it, Nezumi. You just punched a guy because he was mean, and you made excuses to cover up for it."
"Smart ass."
Shion tutted and turned away, making Nezumi quickly scramble for a reason to continue their conversation and keep the interest of him.
"So, is this your first detention of the year?"
"Just my first ever detention." Nezumi almost fell out of his chair when Shion said that; he had detention at least once a week, and was practically booked every day after school for the next month.
"That's a lie. But it would explain why you're a prefect. You're gonna be head boy when we're in our seventh year. You're amazing at every subject, you're probably the most intelligent in our year, and this is your first ever detention,"
