Lily Evans didn't know why James Potter seemed so intent to make her life so hard. He seemed to treat her like a prize to be won and she was sick of it. He didn't care about her and that's what she wanted. She needed someone who loved her with their whole not because she was the 'smart, cute one'. Sometimes she could swear he looked at her so lovingly though and it confused her.
He didn't love her, he liked the idea of her. There was nothing more to it to her and so, she did her best to ignore his advances. It was hard seeing as he was in his face nearly everyday. He would say something dumb like "Evans, will you go on a date with me because you look really hot in that dress." and she didn't want that in a relationship. But besides that, James Potter was just infuriating. He was smirking almost all the time and he was a bully.
Everything about him infuriated her and made her want to scream out of the frustration. There was nothing worse than James Potter she supposed. Until of course she had to go back home with a sister who hated her very existence and an ex-friend who was trying desperately to redeem himself. So, she braced herself when going to Hogwarts again because she didn't want to deal with James Potter but he was head boy with her so she had to.
But as a week passed and she had hardly gotten anything from James she grew suspicious, trying desperately to catch him alone to confront him about it. He's finally found a better prize. It was a bitter thought, she knew, but it's how she felt. It was James Potter and he didn't care about her. But as she finally caught him alone, late at night coming into the common room after a detention for one reason or another she couldn't be angry at him.
"Potter. Did I bore you or something? You lose interest?" She had to stop herself from wincing at the pain that was evident in her voice and James noticed it too and she just wanted to die because she did not care about how James felt about her. He kept opening and closing his mouth again and he seemed to be desperately trying to tell her something. He took a deep breath before diving right in.
"Lily, you're like this amazing fairytale to me. You're a fantasy and I love you Lily. You're like leather jackets and flower crowns and the feeling of flying through the air without having to fly. You leave me speechless and I could never grow tired of you because you're not just beautiful. You're intelligent but that's not it either. I love your smiles that you share with everybody and the way a room brightens up when you walk in. I love the way your hair looks in the summer sun and the way that it contrasts with your pale skin which gets even paler in the winter. I love your freckles and your smile and your eyes god Lily I love your eyes and-" She cut him off and crashed her lips into his. He seemed surprised at first but she couldn't let him keep going on because this was what she'd wanted to hear for so long.
She let her arms wrap around his neck as their bodies molded together so seemingly perfect but it wasn't like the things her friends would say or how she thought kissing would work at all. Because honestly, even though she'd dated plenty of people, she hadn't kissed anyone at all. And this was amazing it wasn't like fireworks it was like fire. A burning passion in the pit of her stomach that was warming her whole body to the point where she felt like she would melt. And she realized that everything was going to be okay because he was here and she was here and they were together and they were kissing.
It all felt hopeless. After leaving Hogwarts, all that they were surrounded with was war and it was torturous to watch her friends die. Marlene and Dorcas had only just learnt that they loved each other when they were killed and Mary was dead and so were Gideon and Fabian and Benjy and they were all gone. Lily didn't cry when Sirius and Remus and Peter were there but when they left she would just cry her heart out, curled into James because he was all she knew he was her anchor.
She thought back to the times when they would get drunk in the boys' dormitory and spend late nights laughing and having fun because they didn't care that there was a war going on. But now it seemed like late nights were spent sitting in silence, everyone too afraid to fall asleep because anything could happen. There were some nights that were better than others. Where Lily didn't feel hopeless and Remus and Sirius actually seemed kind of happy. And Peter would bake them something and James would smile more.
But their real light, their real shining ray of hope came on that day when she suddenly found herself throwing up in the bathroom as soon as she woke up and with a sudden realization of what this meant she had to figure it out. And when she realized she was pregnant, she just let herself fall to the bathroom floor in happiness and she was crying and she wasn't quiet about it because yes, this kid would be raised during a war but it was her child. And not just her child but also James' child. It was their child
And so, when James came into the bathroom to find out what was happening she smiled at him. "James- James I'm pregnant" she was delighted but she couldn't read his thoughts as he stared at her seemingly unfocused but a grin broke out on his face and suddenly he was lifting her to her feet and picking her up and she smiled because this was okay, they were okay
She didn't process his words until he set her down again and he began to ramble. "Can I tell Sirius or do you want to? Oh I hope it's a boy but I hope he has your eyes of course. I wouldn't be against it if he looks exactly like you either. Or if it's a girl who is literally a tiny you. Lily this is just, so amazing." she had to stop from laughing at the way he looked and she bit her lip instead.
"James. Of course you can tell Sirius. But the child, no matter the gender, had better get your hair because I love your hair so much." she reached up to run her fingers through his always messy hair because it was amazing and when he smiled down at her she felt like she would melt because this suddenly wasn't real and it was one of the few moments where he could make her go speechless. The other two being when he first professed her love for her and she had to respond by kissing him and when he proposed to her with this super romantic setup.
"Are you allowed to floo or apparate when your pregnant? I don't want to do anything that could hurt the baby." She couldn't help but laugh at the way his eyes were lit up because this was James Potter not the one who'd been spending all his time worrying and crying and fighting. She assured him that it would be fine and he grinned so widely that it lit up the house and the war was once again gone from her mind. So she held his hand and they were apparating to Remus and Sirius' and everything was fine.
They were happy and they were here.
