Turning Tables

I looked up at the ‘fun house’. When I was a kid I got lost in one of these for over an hour and a half; I’ve hated them ever since. The broken down appearance of the place didn’t help at all.

The entrance was a clown’s mouth. As if clowns weren’t scary enough, half of the teeth were missing, not lying around, just gone, the rest were yellowed and the paint was chipped. Bright red X’s were spray-painted over the clown’s eyes, probably vandals that broke in after the park closed down.

The entire place gave off a strange aura. Maybe it was the cobwebs that clothed the place like a blanket or the rancid odour that hung in the air or maybe it was the chill that made you feel like death’s icy grip was close.

I shivered, pulling my thick jacket closer to me as I strode toward the building that haunted my nightmares. Normally I wouldn’t even look at this place but I needed to go in. Something was pushing me towards it, and I couldn’t stop it if I tried.

As soon as I stepped into the clown’s mouth I was enveloped in darkness. Barely being able to see, I stumbled around, constantly looking behind me to make sure no one was following me. I could feel myself being pulled forward, as if someone had grabbed hold of the front of my shirt and was dragging me after them like a ragdoll. I struggled, but it was no use; the person, who was not there, was too strong.

Shadows flickered around me in the semi darkness and morphed into things of unrecognisable terror, before slipping back into the shadows. My breathing sped and I began to kick and scream, but my kicks landed on nothing and my screams turned to nothingness as they left my lips.

Tears were now making tracks down my face and dripping off my chin, hitting the ground with a plop that echoed around the hollow room I had been left in. My knees began to shake and soon enough my legs gave in, causing me to collapse to the ground.

What had I done? I didn’t deserve this! Sobs wracked my chest as more tears poured from my eyes. I had been a good kid! Sure, I had been a brat at times, but isn’t everyone? I screamed, demanding to know what I had done.

“You created me, Culler, don’t you remember?” I knew that voice. That voice belonged to James Calvin. But, he was dead; I knew that for a fact. I whipped my head around to where his voice came from, but saw nothing but shadows.

“James?” I whispered. “James, you’re dead! This isn’t happening!” I shook my head and a figure stepped out from the shadows. “No, no no no no no NO!” I screamed.

“Yes!” James snarled. “Look at what you did to me, Culler Kritanta Daniels!” I looked up at him and almost threw up. He had deep scars that ran from his temples down to his mouth on either side of his face. Burns blanketed his throat and bits of the flesh on his nose were gone, exposing cartilage and distorting his face completely. He no longer looked human, let alone like a 13 year old boy.

“Kritanta. Fitting name don’t you think?  Did you know it means God of death?” I shook my head stiffly. “And Cull? Means discriminate. You always were discriminatory, Culler.” James spat out the last sentence. “Now look at me…” He trailed off as a tear dripped off a scarred cheek.

“This is your fault!” He roared, storming towards me. “You did this to me! Kylie will never want me!”  I couldn’t help but giggle slightly at that. “What?” He snarled, his spittle hitting my face.

“She never wanted you James.” I said leaning towards him slightly as he cowered back. “Don’t you see? It was all a game!” I exclaimed. “A joke,  at your expense.” I smiled at the end. He was just a kid, like me, what could he do?

“NO!” He roared. “She loved me! She promised!” I began to feel pity for the small boy. He had done nothing wrong, I just made a bad decision, he was right, this is all my fault. “You’ll pay!” Tears dribbled down James’ face. “All of you! I’ll get you all! I promise!”  He yelled, storming from the room, quietly sobbing. James had returned for us.
