"And then he asked me out!" Your friend squeals at this point in the story, over excited by her own experience. You smile. You're happy for her. Your small group of friends were all getting boyfriends, one by one. You rest your elbow on the desk and lean against your hand. Your mind starts to wander.

Dating is a strange subject to you. What does it mean to be a couple? Some couples go ages without going on a single date, but still love each other. Would you ever go on a date? What's it like? To walk hand in hand, to share laughs, to secretly smile at each other, to do stupid things with one another? Is that what it was?

Your friend pokes you and snaps you out of your thoughts. You shrug it off and continue with your day.

--------------

Junmyeon waits for you at the school entrance. "Hey." He says with a smile. You smile back.

"Hey."

He asks you how your day was and you say it was fine. You tell him about your friends and you sigh. "I wonder if I'll ever get a boyfriend too, you know?"

All he says is, "Mm." He nods to show he's listening.

Kim Junmyeon has been your friend since preschool. In all your memories, he'd been so good to you. So kind. He'd never gotten mad at you. Whenever you were feeling down, he was there to lift you up. All those years.

Back in preschool, when no one played with you, he walked over with his fingers covered in paint, flashed his white-teeth, and said, "Let's paint!" In Kindergarten, when you realized you had no friends at your lunch, he came over and said, "Can I sit with you?" In first grade, you'd fallen off the swing-set and hurt your knee. Junmyeon gave you a band-aid and stayed with you in the nurse's office. In second grade, you'd forgotten it was picture day. He walked over, fixed your bangs around a bit, and told you, "You look pretty." In third grade, you lost your notebook that had all the notes for the test. He'd handed you his and said, "I already studied." In fourth grade, you didn't have enough money to buy lunch and he'd shared his with you. In fifth grade, you'd gotten lost on your way to his house and he ran half an hour to find you.

The stories go on and on. He let you borrow his umbrella, he watched movies with you when everyone was busy, he let you cry and tell him what's wrong, he talked to you on the phone when you were bored, he made jokes when you were sad. He was always with you. Junmyeon was part of your life and it only felt natural to be with him when you had the chance. It was a little like a rubber band. When you were away from him with all your girl friends, it felt almost unnatural. You'd gravitate towards him, get pulled to him. It was instinct.

You two arrive at your house first, as usual, and he stops you before you can leave by holding onto your sleeve. "Yeah? What's wrong?" You turn and ask him.

He takes a deep breath, as if to say something, but stops. He tries again. "Look... I'm..." He rubs the back of his neck. "I'm moving away."

Times stops moving. You freeze. Your heart stops pounding, your head goes blank, everything stops. "What?" You yell out.

He looks you in the eye. "I'm moving away in two weeks."

You open your mouth. Close it. Open it again. "Then...Junmyeon...what am I supposed to do...with...my best friend?" You're on the verge of tears. He  pulls you in for a hug and you stand there limply in his arms.

"Why don't we go on a date?" He whispers it, as if he didn't quite want you to hear.

"W...what?"

"You said, you've never been on a date. So...let's go on one. Before I have to leave."

What is this feeling? He sounds halfhearted, as if he's doing this solely for your sake. But you nod. "Yeah. Let's do it."
