A/N hey guys let me know what you think of this story so far, this Is my first story, so it may be rubbish, the medical stuff in this chapter and in future chapters may be wrong as I am not a medical student or a doctor, the stuff used in here is from Greys Anatomy and Google, sorry for any mistakes. Enjoy, and feel free to comment, but please no hate, if you don't like my story then stop reading.
Bye guys enjoy!I scrub in before entering the operating room, crap I keep saying American words, I did live there for 15 years I guess, and I prefer saying OR to theatre. I head into the OR and assess the injuries, I'm concerned about his chest wound it looks like the bullet may be lodged in his heart, I check his abdomen and the wound is through and through, I page a general surgeon to operate on the abdominal wound, I spent most of my residency on cardio so I decide to operate on the chest wound. "Scalpel." I am handed the scalpel, I make two cuts to extend the bullet hole, to see the bullet is lodged in his aorta, to remove the bullet I need to perform an endovascular repair, "BP?" I ask the scrub nurse, "140 over 90, he's hypertensive." This complicates the surgery as the aorta is involved if the blood pressure (BP) rises the aorta could make the tear from the bullet larger, so the patient would bleed out into his chest cavity, "Push nitroglycerin." This should lower his BP, "Pushing nitroglycerin. BP is stable, 110 over 80" I sigh a breath of relief, now I need to put the patient on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) so that I can stop the heart and keep the blood pumping around the body, then I need to remove the bullet and patch up the aorta. The perfusionist puts the patient on CPB, then I remove the bullet and begin stitching a patch on the aorta, I hope it holds, the patch is holding. I ask the perfusionist to bring the patient off CPB I begin massaging the heart to help it start beating again, I stop massaging the heart to see if it can beat on its own. After a few seconds the heart begins to beat on its own, the general surgeon hair repaired the abdomen, now I need to take him to the intensive care unit, the next few hours will be critical.
I walk out of the OR and check the time it's now 1:15pm, that was a bloody long surgery! 5 hours long! I make my way to the waiting room to inform his colleagues, I am greeted by the man who brought him in, "How is he? How is Cody?" He looks worried now all of the officers are gathered around me, "The operation went well, I repaired his heart and Dr Johnson repaired his abdominal injury, Cody is currently in the intensive care unit, the next few hours are critical, so we will be checking up on him regularly." I say smiling this is the best part of the job, "Can we go and see him?" I don't see why not. "Yeah sure follow me-" I turn to show them to his room but they all pull me into a group hug before clapping and thanking me for what I did, I smile and lead them to Cody's room, "Now you will have to go in in small groups, probably of 3. He will probably be unconscious for a few hours, but you are welcome to sit with him. I will be back in an hour to take him for some scans and to run some tests." The guy who brought him in, I think I heard him being called Brad, came over to me, "Thank you so much doctor B, you saved not just my partner, but my brother and my best friend, and for that I owe you." I chuckle at him, "You don't owe me anything, seeing you all happy is payment enough." I wave and leave to get some lunch I'm starving.
I sit alone in the cafeteria, until Dr Williams came and joined me, "I was watching your surgery from the gallery, and well I'm impressed, I thought you specialised in trauma? How the hell did you do that cardio procedure?" He sounded surprised, just so you know in most of the ORs there is a window kinda above where the surgery is happening where other doctors can watch surgeries. "I wasn't always interested in trauma, the first years of my residency I focused mainly on cardio, but I switched to trauma at last minute, I can't actually remember why I did it but I'm glad I did because there is no way I could do surgeries like that back to back!" I tell him, he looks impressed, "Well at least I know we have a spare cardio surgeon of necessary, by the way the A&E situation was handled perfectly, welcome to the team." He is a lot friendlier than my old chief of surgery, I'm not kidding you but he was horrific, he made every doctor and nurse write down lists of their sexual partners, so he knew what was happening in his hospital, I'm sorry but what is that about!
I return the the A&E department after my lunch to see how it's going so far there have only been 2 fatalities out of 7 patients, that's pretty good going! There were some really serious injuries, I notice a non critical patient is handcuffed to the bed, she must be the shooter. I go to the nurses station and ask Olivia, "Who is that handcuffed to the bed? Is she the shooter?" Olivia looks to where I'm pointing, "Yeah she came in a few minutes ago with a few cuts that needed stitches and a graze on her arm from a bullet, she didn't deserve to survive that, so far 2 families have lost their daughter, son, mother, father, brother or sister, you know it's just not justice." Olivia looked pretty pissed, "I know what you mean but we have to care for her like she is innocent, because justice will be served when she is locked up for a very long time. 2 families will be going through hell but you have to look at the 5 families who haven't lost a loved one, in fact come with me I want to show you something." I grab Olivia's arm and drag her to the intensive care unit, where all the officers are hanging around Cody's room, "You see this-" I point to the officers, "This is one family who didn't lose a brother, there are another 4 families like this one in this hospital and there will be more once everyone is out of surgery, you have to see it as glass half full, not glass half empty." I smile at her, she is tearing up "Thank you." "It's ok, will you help me get him to CT please." We walk into Cody's room to be greeted by the officers chanting my name, "BAKER! BAKER! WE LOVE DR BAKER!" I laugh at them all, "Hey guys do you mind if we borrow Cody for a few minutes? We are just going to take him for a scan." They all look at Cody and nod to us, we wheel his gurney and head to CT. Olivia took Cody back to the ICU while I wait for the scans to come up on the computer in front of me, when they come up I look at them for a while, I get them printed and head to show the guys.
I walk into the ICU and their faces drop, "Oh no, what's wrong with him doc?" The all look like I'm about to tell them he is dying, "Well guys I just wanted to show you Cody's scans-" They all give me funny looks, "HIS SCANS ARE CLEAR!" They all sigh a breath of relief, "Damn Baker don't scare us like that!" Brad said to me.
