Sir Arthur Conan Doyle thought of the main idea for Sherlock and Mycroft from Arthur and Allistor Kirkland, from their sibling hatred, to them secretly having deduction powers of their own, only Doyle and the other Kirkland brothers know about the deduction powers. Arthur Kirkland is who Sherlock Holmes was based off of, from his cold nature, too his only having three real friends, and his deduction powers. Allistor Kirkland is who Mycroft Holmes was based off of, from him secretly being a protective brother, too trying to get his closest friend to spy on him, to the deduction powers as well. The two hate working together, but know they will need each other, much like the Holmes brother. Then you have Owen who's the third mysterious Holmes brother no one knows much about.
