Jessie's POV
Tears fell from my eyes as Rhett hugged me tightly. We were going to get married. The man that I love with all my heart loves me just as much and wants me to be the one he's with forever. He's going to be my husband. I couldn't express the joy I was feeling in that moment. It was such a wonderful feeling. Better than anything I've ever experienced. "R-Rhett? I-I don't know what to say other than you've made me the happiest I've ever been in my whole life! I love you so, so much. You have no idea how much I do. Thank you. Thank you." I smiled and stood on my tiptoes. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him down so we could kiss.
We kissed passionately for as long as we could before we broke it to breathe. I laughed when we did, I was just so happy. "You're so welcome, Jess. Thank you for saying yes! You made me the happiest I've ever been too! I love you so much with every fiber of my being. You make me so happy every second we're together. Sorry if I seemed distant tonight, I was so nervous." He chuckled lightly and smiled. I laughed as well.
"You were nervous? I guess if I had to propose I would be too, but didn't you know I'd say yes?" I smiled and he grabbed my left hand. He lifted it up and slipped the engagement ring on it.
"It looks beautiful on you. And yes, I was pretty certain you'd say yes, but that didn't stop me from being nervous. I was scared about messing up, but I didn't and you said yes and we're going to get married. Jess, you're going to be my wife! We're engaged, I-I can't quite believe it! I'm actually going to get married and to the woman I love so, so much! If you're tired, I can take you home." Rhett smiled, his voice was so gentle and quiet. He smiled again and tucked my hair behind my ear. I smiled up at him and shook my head.
"No, I'm not tired and I don't want this beautiful moment to end yet." We were sitting on the bench, Rhett was holding both my hands in his. The last red rays of sunlight were spread across the sky and a warm breeze gently blew my hair. Some of it blew in front of my face and Rhett smiled. He gently slipped that hair behind my ear as well and leaned forward. He kissed my forehead ever so softly and leaned his forehead onto my.
"I love you, Jessie, so much." His voice was barely above a whisper and low in pitch. I smiled and rubbed the back of his hand with my thumb.
"I love you too, Rhett. Just as much. Thank you." I spoke softly and quietly. There was no need to be loud, it was more relaxed when we were talking the way we were.
Once the last rays on the sun finally disappeared over the horizon, Rhett stood up and I did with him. We were both still smiling so happily and he put an arm around my waist. The only lights were the faint glows of the streetlights and the car's headlights as they sped by. In that moment, despite the still busy traffic of downtown Burbank, it seemed we were the only two people in the world. Just us. In our minds that was. We barely even noticed our surroundings.
Rhett lead me to his car and opened the door again. He slipped his hand into mine and helped me to sit. It was a gentlemen thing to do, but there was no real reason for it. Yet it still made my heart swell. He closed my door quietly and went around the car to his side. He got in and grabbed my hand again. He smiled at me and started to drive away. We stayed mostly in silence, a few comments made here and there, but we were just enjoying each other's company. There was no reason to talk right now. We both knew what the other was going to say and it was the same thing we would have been saying.
Rhett pulled the car into my driveway and leaned forward. Our lips met again in a passionate kiss. His beard tickled my face, but it felt so natural. He was the one. I knew it from the first time I saw him. He was a very handsome man, almost ruggedly handsome, but I loved him for him. The fact that he looked so good was a bonus, he was a good man that stood for the same morals as me and believed the same things I did. We broke the kiss and he smiled again. "Goodnight Jessie. I love you." It was such a simple thing to say, but it meant the world to me, and he knew that.
"I love you too. Goodnight, Rhett." He got out and opened my car door again, still smiling. He took my hand once more and helped me up. Again, not necessary, yet it made me love him that much more. He wrapped his arm around my waist again and walked me to my door.
"Well, my love, looks like this is the end of our journey for tonight, but don't worry, it will continue again soon. Would you like to come with me to see Link tomorrow?"
"I'd love to, but I have family coming here that I have to pick up from the airport. I promise to get to seeing him as soon as I can. I really like Link, so I really want to see him. I'm sorry, Rhett."
"No, don't worry about it, Jess. We can go some other time. Don't worry about it. Goodnight. I'll be heading back to the hospital now." He smiled and lightly kissed my forehead with his hand cupping my face. I smiled up at him and hugged him tightly, resting my head on his chest."Goodnight, sweetheart. I love you so much."
"I love you too, honey. So very, very much." And with that, he walked away, his tall figure disappearing into the darkness. He got into his car and drove off. I smiled and went inside. Today had been such an amazing day. I'll never forget it. Ever.
