Isabelle was scared. She'd looked everywhere, but when she had searched her house she found no one. Her parents were always home by the time she stepped off the bus.
Isabelle finished searching her house for the second time. She sat down on the couch and started crying. She didn't know where her family was and she didn't know anybody's phone number to call them on the landline. She stopped crying long enough to turn on the TV. When she saw the news coverage she started crying again, curling in on herself. She was beyond scared now. She was terrified.
Everything the seven-year-old's parents taught her was thrown out the window. She was simply too frozen in her spot to do anything. So, when she heard the front door knob being turned she was understandably frightened. Being terrified more only served to make her start cry harder.
Quick, light footsteps walked over to her and an audible gasp was heard.
"Crap. Crap. CRAP. Kid, hey kid. Wake up. Where are your parents?" Said a frantic teen boy who kneeled beside the couch next to Isabelle.
Isabelle calmed slightly at his words as she recognized his voice as belonging to one of her brother's friends. She turned over with tears still streaming down her face to look at him.
"Evan!" She exclaimed, happy to see a familiar face.
The boy smiled slightly, but was quick to frown in concern as he said, "Where are your parents? Where is Hade? Where is Lucy?"
Isabelle's lip quivered as she replied in a shaky voice, "I-I don't k-know."
Not wanting to restart tears that had only stopped moments before Evan quickly deflected, "Well it's about dinner time. Can I dig 'round in the kitchen and fix us something?"
Isabelle nodded and followed Evan as he got up and entered the kitchen he had been in so many times before.
Evan made two grilled cheeses and some tomato soup for the both of them to share.
There was a lot on his mind as he sat down next to Isabelle while they ate. He wondered if the child knew what was going on outside or if she was oblivious. His question was soon answered.
"Do-o you t-think they w-were taken b-by those thing-gs?" Isabelle said, with her typical stutter.
Evan looked thoughtful for a moment, playing with his lip ring a moment before replying, "Nah. I think they're fine. Probably dragged out by a rescue group."
Isabelle nodded, because she believed Evan. He was the kindest of her older siblings' friends. He would never lie to her.
They ate the rest of their dinner in silence.
After dinner Evan washed their dishes and put them away. He asked Isabelle if she had any homework and told her to go do it while he tried to call someone.
She listened to him. Evan was around so much it was like he was part of her family. And he kind of was.
Evan tried Isabelle's mom's cell phone first. When it went straight to voicemail he tried Hade's phone. Someone picked up.
He breathed an audible sigh of relief and was quick to say, "Hade thank God where are you guys? I'm freaking out. Your little sist-"
Evan was cut off as someone interrupted, "Who is this? Can you help me? I'm stranded and surrounded. They're all around me. I can't get out! I don't know what to do. Please help!" The person sounded on the verge of tears.
"Okay. Please calm down. Where are you?" Evan replied, hoping they were nearby. Safety in numbers and all that.
"I'm at the grocery store on Williams Street. My parents thought we could find some supplies, but I ended up being cornered and finding this phone. Please help us!" The call got cut off after that and Evan contemplated his choices. He could save the person or let them possibly die. He really didn't feel comfortable letting someone die, but he also didn't want Isabelle to get hurt. He had an idea.
