Isabelle walked beside Evan. He seemed confident, striding down the sidewalk at a controlled pace. Isabelle was the exact opposite. She was ducking down behind Evan as they walked and holding on to his belt.
Neither of them had seen any of the "monsters" that caused the world to panic. Maybe that was because they'd been lucky. Or maybe it was the silence before the storm.
They finally arrived at the grocery store after twenty minutes of silent walking. Evan drew his sword and cautiously opened the door. He moved inside more, to where he could hear shouting. What he saw when he walked through the aisles back to the single stall bathrooms shocked him. There was a group of four humans banging on the door, shouting threats and insults.
"Hey!" Evan shouted, getting their attention. They turned towards his voice, and the tallest of the four stepped towards them.
The short but broad-shouldered man replied in a thick country accent, "We got one of 'em monsters locked up in 'ere. Could really use y'alls help to spring the lock and kill it."
Evan was suddenly but hard by the realization that the person that had called them wasn't a human. Evan shook his head no, backing up with his sword raised.
"No. The person in there called us for help. We're gonna help them." Evan said and squared his shoulders.
Isabelle came out slightly from behind Evan to look at the man, and his crew. They were an interesting sight, covered in blood and dirt. She wrinkled her nose in disgust. The way they looked matched how they smelled.
"What'd you say? You a monster too?" At that the man stepped forward threateningly.
Evan lowered his sword some and spoke, "No," he sighed, "I just want to help them and move on with my life. Please just leave."
The man scratched at his stubble and looked backwards at his crew, who had stopped banging on the door to watch the exchange. "What do you think boys? Think we should let it live?" They shifted uncertainly. One of the three, the only one with long hair, stepped forward a little and said, "I mean there 're more everywhere else. We can just round up more of 'em."
Their leader looked at Evan for a second or two before nodding, "Alright. 's your funeral." The group gathered their things and left.
Evan sighed in relief, that was easier than he thought it'd be. Almost too easy. He wasn't going to dwell on it now, so he moved forward to knock on the door.
"Hey. It's Evan. The guy you talked to on the phone. Hello?" He leaned on the door to try to hear a response and almost fell on his face when the door opened. He barely managed to catch himself on the doorjamb. He moved to of the way of the door and Isabelle cowered behind him yet again. They could hear growling from inside the bathroom. Suddenly, something darted out of the bathroom and launched itself at Evan.
Isabelle let go of Evan as the thing bowled over him and knocked his sword out of his hand and him to the floor.
"D-doggy!" Isabelle exclaimed at the thing now on Evan's chest. It licked his face and got off of him. It sat there, wagging it's tail, as Evan got up.
Isabelle ran up to it and pet the wolf-like canine. They stayed like that for a few minutes. Evan stood there as Isabelle pet the animal. The animal eventually nudges Isabelle's hand away, backed up slightly, and started to morph.
Isabelle crinkled her nose in disgust at the sound that the rearranging of bones made. Evan backed away quickly, and he scrambled to stand in front of Isabelle. This was a mistake.
