The Set Up

I don't know what I expected from Shawn but I know that it wasn't what he did for me. I expected a boring trip to the mall with something greasy and cheap for dinner. Instead he drove us up to the country side with amazing views and with menus filled with expensive foods that neither of us could pronounce. After dinner we saw a movie that made you think instead of numbed your senses. But there was always something off throughout the whole date.

First off, I had felt awkward and out of place when I opened the door to see Shawn in a suit when I had put on some nice jeans, sneakers, and a top. Running upstairs to change into something more presentable I ended up making us late. What was even worse was that I had spent twenty minutes looking for matching shoes and listening to Shawn insisted that he couldn't tell the difference between the navy wedges and the black ones. They both looked equally as painful to him.

The drive up was amazing! The view was great and the weather was clear. Shawn had a great taste of music that we sang along to the whole ride up. The only thing out of place was the car behind us. The windows were tinted so we couldn't exactly tell who was inside. They honked consistently when they were driving behind us half the way up. For the second half they cut in front of us and drove painfully slowly. Shawn almost ran into them a few times when they decided to make a couple of sudden stops for no reason.

The restaurant was great. It was warm unlike most of the places I've eaten. The food tasted like it wasn't frozen prior to being warmed up and the waiting staff didn't treat us like two random kids. The people sitting behind us, however, had no table manners. They screamed, laughed loudly, and sneezed or coughed everywhere. At one point I turned to face one of them and quickly turned around. I could place that blonde hair cut from a mile away. Dawson really was trying to ruin my date.

During the movie was the last straw. Him and his friends took the seats behind us and insisted on throwing popcorn at the back of our reads throughout the movie. After moving about four times and a few threats from Shawn they finally let up. Unfortunately the movie was fifteen minutes from finishing at that point and Shawn and I didn't have the chance to do any cute things during the film.

The ride home was uninterrupted and, despite the setbacks, Shawn confessed that he had a great time. I kept my cool on the outside but inside I was infuriated. I was ready to find Dawson and rip his head off. If he thought that he could get away with trying to ruin my date he had another thing coming. My next mission would be to find his girlfriend Hayley and explain all of the borderline cheating he had been doing while they were apart.

When we finally reached my house Shawn stopped his car, leaned over, and kissed me. At first I was surprised. There was no small talk or a goodbye he just went for it. His lips were soft and he was gentle but there was something missing here. He pulled away and asked me for a second date, I nodded while getting out of his car.

I got inside of the house and noticed how quiet it was. My parents probably went out for dinner. I grabbed a drink from the fridge and made my way to my room eager to get my constricting dress off.

When I was finally settled I sat on my bed frowning. The night was perfect and Shawn was a great guy so why did I feel so underwhelmed? There was something, that I couldn't put my finger on, that wasn't there. Shrugging I picked up my phone- which was off for the duration of the date- and looked at my texts. The very first one was from Dawson. I hope you have a great date tonight J

I let out an angry breath as I scanned through my contacts looking for Amber. It was dark but it wasn't late so she should have still been awake. You won't believe what Dawson did today. She replied to me almost instantly as usual, what? Dawson? I thought you were going on a date with Shawn. I laughed quietly at how much she didn't know, I thought so too until Dawson and his friends showed up and tried their best to mess it up. You know, I want to find Hayley and tell her about all the stuff her 'boyfriend' is doing when she isn't around. I could almost see Amber's face in my head as I read her text, that ass! You know what, girl, do what you gotta do. I'll be here for back up.

I sent Amber a quick thanks and a text goodbye before turning my music up and starting on my homework. Doing anything that involves brain power and intelligence could clear my mind better than anything else. It was the focus needed that made me realize that if I could push my problems away to finish a few math questions obviously whatever I'm worrying about isn't that important.

It was 11 o'clock when I was on my last few questions and got my text from Shawn, hey! I know we went on a date a few hours ago but I wanted to say goodnight. Can't wait to see you at school tomorrow. Smiling, I responded to him and went to bed. Maybe things were looking up for me after all.

The next few days were great. Shawn and I had been spending a lot more time together and Amber stopped bugging me about Dawson when she saw how happy Shawn really made me. Margaret was warmer to me when she realized that I had pushed Dawson out of my life and she had even started flirting with him now that I wasn't her competition, though I did have to remind her about his girlfriend a few times.

Brooklyn didn't talk to me for a few days but her crush for Dawson soon came back when she finally accepted me and Shawn. At first I wanted to tell her to lay off of Dawson but then I realized that I was happy and I didn't want to ruin that. If she and Margaret wanted to fight to the death over a cheating lying pig then let them. Maybe they would even take his attention off of me.

On Friday Amber came over to our lunch table and invited the girls, me, and Shawn over to her house for a movie. Margaret, Brooklyn, and Faith already had individual plans but Shawn and I decided to go together as a little date. We figured it would be fun and a good opportunity for him to get to know Amber.

That night when Shawn and I arrived we noticed the lack of shoes at the front door. Walking down stairs I saw Amber, Dawson, and Hayley sharing popcorn and deciding on a movie. I let out another heavy sigh and contemplated creeping up the stairs and going home. I should have known that this was one of Amber's master plans.

I took too long to decide whether or not to leave and Amber spotted us at the top of the stairs. She waved us down smiling as if her plan was finally coming into place. We all exchanged awkward hellos and sat down. Amber was the only one remotely excited and the mood in the room had changed drastically.

After twenty minutes and no clear decision on what movie to watch Amber stood up, "Hayley and Shawn, could you help me with something in the kitchen?" She asked innocently as she climbed up the stairs, "Celeste I trust that you and Dawson can choose a proper movie to watch."

I glared at her until I couldn't see her figure anymore before turning to Dawson, "Alright let's get this over with. How about this one?" I pointed at the first movie I saw and he shook his head.

"This one." He pointed at another one and I shook my head.

"No, this one." Dawson smirked at me shaking his head and I let out an unsteady sigh. "If we disagree for the sake of arguing with each other we're never going to choose a movie."

"You're right," he said nodding. "Why don't we watch this one..." He reached for a movie on the other side of me causing our bodies to brush together. He laid a quick kiss on my lips and pulled back before I could say anything. "I think that we'd both like this movie." He said teasingly.

I didn't know what to say, I couldn't say anything, and when I tried someone said it before me.

"You lying, cheating, pig!" A voice that I recognized to be Hayley's cried out before running up the stairs and slamming the front door behind her.

Shawn's face was red and his hands were balled up in fists. "If I didn't have a football scholarship to keep I'd kill you." His voice was low and angry, "Celeste, I'd love to take you home but I'd rather you not see me angry. Plus, I think you have some things to discuss with your friends."

Shawn stormed up the stairs leaving me, Dawson, and Amber alone.
