Izumiko no longer felt the warmth radiating off the blazing bonfire, but the music ringed in her ears still. They were both in the farthest corner of the courtyard, and it was dark compared to the flames the students mingled about. The moon was just coming out and seemed to shimmer down on them, giving them at least a little light. The trees hung over the cold stone bench, the sky a milky way of stars, or at least it would be if they were at Mt. Takamura instead of Tokyo.
Normally Izumiko would be less comforted by this, but she couldn't find herself to notice after such a day. She wanted to say something. It was almost awkward, them sitting and saying nothing, her face a bright red. She looked over at Miyuki and it dawned on her that his eyes were already drooping and was giving into exhaustion. The cut on his cheek and bruises on his body were quite apparent... Izumiko felt wistful.
She didn't want to put Miyuki through this... She didn't want to burden him with the task of being her protector. But still, she was glad he came. Masumi didn't put her in real danger... The himegami didn't, either. It was Izumiko herself. She was shutting herself out and away from the real world; the world with her loved ones and friends. And Miyuki. Miyuki, who never even wanted to be stuck with her.
She was a burden.
And if things could get even more complicated, it became that the himegami wasn't some scary demon that would occasionaly posses her. No, it was much worse. Izumiko was her. They were becoming the same. Maybe were all along. Same person. It left her blank.
As her thoughts were being overcome with this chilling realization, Miyuki rests his head on her shoulder, and she flinches in surprise. His hand covered hers, and without realizing it, her face flushes. She shivers, hoping the vibrant red of her cheeks weren't too apparent; but the festival and sounds were still far away. "M-miyuki?" She sputtered out, but he already appeared to be asleep.
She know he hated when she called him that. It was too girly, a name like that, and one that his father gave to him. Yet she couldn't help it sometimes. It was odd saying his formal name; like they were strangers.
He seems to collapse against her. She tries everything not to scream, her mouth agape.
Miyuki had fallen asleep on her.
She sat rigid and frozen for a few moments before eventually warmth comes to her face and a smile spreads. The loud students and music soon becomes very distant. She squeezes his hand and soon falls asleep herself, Miyuki supporting her weight and she doing the same for him.
