ILLUMINATE
Matthew Espinosa
Chapter-21Wow. The view was absolutely remarkable yet saddening; the trees around that were dead, a beautiful girl that's should've be happy but she's wasn't, and the sky's full moon that still manages to hold its gaze upon the night.
"Walking a billion miles the opposite direction from home was so worth it." I say in awe, tracing my finger over the palm line of my hand.
Tonight with Madison Montgomery was fun. I've never hung out with a girl, being as I've went to an all boys school most of my life.
Could it be possible that this night was the best thing that has ever happened? Because it was. Except-
"Tell me about him. The guy who likes you." I say with my hands in my pocket.
"Who? Shawn?" She questions caustically.
"Yeah.. Him." An enticing smile tugs at my lips, while the breeze messed with my short, dirty blonde hair. "Shawn sounds like a name of a guy who is very choosy about who he dates."
A pragmatic smirk plasters onto her face at the sound of Shawn's name coming from another's mouth. "He's far from that." She lets out somberly. "He's super kind, caring; although he can be a tad bit pretentious at times, and yeah, he's just great ."
"From what you just told me, it looks like you really like him also." Shit. That really sucks.
"It's not a lie." She mumbles, abashed. "Has he asked you out yet? I hope he has." I shake her shoulders, begging for answers.
"Yeah, he did. I didn't give answer yet, though. What should I say?" She stumbles back, tripping over nothing.
"Say yes, dummy!"
"I think I will." She smiles confidently, picking herself back up onto her feet.
Shawn Mendes
I stare at the message on my phone screen, waiting a few seconds until I respond. I don't want to come off as needy.
I then came to the conclusion that I'd call her instead, to confront her about how I really feel.
Almost instantaneously press the call button, eager, to finally let Winter Ethens know my true feelings towards her. I get up from the couch and go out to the backyard to converse. "Hey, it's Shawn." I smiled, bringing my thumb to my lips, biting my nail.
"Yeah." She chuckles. Her effortless laugh made my stomach erupt. It was one of the many things I loved about her. I could vision her smile fade.
"I do." I bit my tongue to keep my other wild thoughts from spilling out.
"Oh.. That's, um.. That's crazy, 'cause I still like you also."
"Cool. So?"
"Erm, I don't know, Shawn. It seems like you really like that Madison girl a lot." Concern surprisingly floods her voice. For once, finally, she isn't making a situation about herself, or maybe that's what she wants me to think.
"No, she actually likes me." Lies depart from between my lips so smoothly as if lying was something I was a pro at. "I'd never date her, though. She's so diligent in her relationships, it's weird."
"right. And do you see the way she looks at you? Ugh, she looks so desperate. Like, aim for someone in your league, please." Winter adds. That kind of crossed the line.
"I never noticed." Yet again, another lie. I'm on fire right now, let's see how far I can get until my web of lies comes unraveling.
"Ughh, you enlighten me, Mendes." She groans , my nose crinkles, imagining how cute she looks.
"Of course I do. I'm Shawn Mendes." I joke.
"I feel like you still have that daddy kink."
"I still have what?" I couldn't make out the last part of her sentence; the line was cutting her off.
"A daddy kink." She repeats.
"Pft. Daddy kinks are for dorks." I laugh, making her laugh also.
I hear my name being called from inside and I let her know that I have to go. "Okay, bye." We both exchange goodbyes and simultaneously hang up.
