Chapter 1

UMINIT ang ulo ko nang inabot sa akin ni Dad ang isang folder. Maayos naman ang trabaho ko bakit kailangan pa nilang gawin ang bagay na ito. Matagal na akong bantay ni Dominique tapos bigla nila akong tatanggalin?

Binagsak ko ang folder sa lamesa ni Dad dahil sa inis. “No! I won’t accept it Dad.”

“You have no choice. Tinatanggal kita bilang tagabantay ng Guevarra at itinatalaga sa ibang assignment,” blankong saad niya sa akin at binuklat ang folder sa harap ko.

The folder contents is a picture of a man and information about him. He's the renowned ‘rogue of court’ and the most eligible bachelor in the Philippines. He joined the NBA but he resigned and applied as a player of PBA instead.

“He is Alec Sebastian Ybañez. Son of the most ruthless lawyer Angelo Ybañez and Getrude Ybañez. He played as the best player of the PBA and a business man too. He got shot five months ago due to a reckless move of his cousin, that’s why his Mother asked my help to guard him,” Dad told me while puffing a smoke from his tobacco.

I knew him, he is Kobe’s cousin and I was there when he got shot. I was part of that reckless move my Dad was saying.

“I knew him. And wait, why me?” Tanong ko kay Dad.

Dad raised his eyebrow. “Because it’s safer and his Mother requested for a skilled woman.”

“I know why you're doing this Dad. I can't believe this!”

Nagdadabog akong lumabas ng opisina niya at napapailing sa ginagawa niyang ito. Huminga ako nang malalim at lumabas ng HQ at diretsong tumungo sa aking sasakyan.

My father wants me to marry an Ybañez. Para saan? Para sa sarili niyang kapakanan. Para sa pera at para sa kapangyarihan. Hindi siya nagtagumpay na ipilit ako ay Kobe at ngayon naman ay sa isang Ybañez.

“How can I watch Kobe from a far now? ‘Yon na nga lang nagpapasaya sa’kin kahit alam kong kahit kailan hindi niya ako mapapansin,” bulong ko sa sarili ko at dinukot ang aking cellphone.

I dialled his number and after a few rings he answered.

“Yes?” His voice was husky. Boses pa lang gwapong-gwapo na ang dating.

I took a deep breathe before answering. “Kobe, Dad assigned me to other assignment.”

“I know. I’m the one who told him.”

My jaw dropped. “W-why? Am I not good enough to my job? Oh Come on! Kobe, I’ve been Dominique’s guard and—“

“And I’m terminating you. Superior mo parin ako Sophia. Have some respect. And if you’re asking me why. Simple, because it’s getting dangerous. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

Kumabog ang puso ko sa sinabi niya. How can I move on from him if he’ll keep on doing this? He’s giving me hope to continue loving him unconsciously.

“O-okay. Sige, I’ll hang up na,” I stuttered.

Hindi na ito sumagot at binaba na agad ang tawag. I sighed deeply when I remembered my confrontation with him when I graduated from criminology.

Pumasok na ako sa sasakyan at nagpasyang pumunta sa King’s Haven Bar. I think I need to get wasted and forget how martyr and hopeless I am. I’ve been in love with him since high school and still now. Who wouldn’t fall for a Van Jakobe?

“Gwapo, mayaman, mabait, astig at higit sa lahat ibang klase kung magmahal,” wika ko sa sarili habang nagmamaneho.

He’s perfect for me. I want him but it seems he doesn’t see me a woman for him. Colleagues lang ako para sa kaniya at nasasaktan ako sa tuwing nakikita ko siyang ngumingiti kay Dominique.
