Rose stared up at the 2 story house surrounded with slightly overgrown plants and scrapes off the paint from not being managed for months maybe even a year; She wasn't entirely sure. It was one of the only houses in the neighbourhood that looked accessible enough to enter.
The house next to the one Rose was looking at was boarded up and she didn't want to find out what was in there.
With her knife in her hand, she walked around to the side of the house and looked at a window. It was in mostly good shape apart from the crack across the top of it down to about half way. If not for the blinds shutting out anything from the outside she could've seen inside.
Rose went back around to the front checking what she could from the windows surrounding the house; concluding nothing was resided inside Rose neared what she assumed to be the front door, grasping onto the handle. She wiggled it one way and then the other but it didn't budge.
She took a bobby pin out of her bag, sticking it into the doors lock, fiddling with the pin, it made a 'click' sound signifying that it was unlocked. Rose put the bobby pin back inside her backpack and moved the door as slow as she could, trying her best not to make too much sound and therefore not gathering unwanted attention.
It creaked open and she stepped inside. The house wasn't as bad as some others she had come across but it wasn't luxurious, but then again nothing really was with dead people walking around the streets.
It would have been a living room back when people lived in it. It had a few lounge chairs and in front of them a smashed t.v.
She clung onto her knife tightly in her hands, praying she wouldn't have to use it. Rose closed the door behind her before scouting the house.
She found the kitchen and searched the cupboards, it looked like the house had already been raided, or the people originally living here had packed what they could and ran, because all that was left were scraps or perishable food that had most likely gone off awhile ago.
She found the stairs and slowly climbed up them, taking in my surroundings. Before she looked around the stairs to see if anything was there Rose paused and listened. She didn't hear any noises other than her own breathing and steady heartbeat.
She took the last step and looked around, there were multiple doors; presumably bedrooms and bathrooms.
Rose opened the closest door to her and found a bedroom. It had toys scattered on the ground and an unkept bed, seeing nothing of us, she walked out and closed the door behind herself.
After scouting the top floor, and only finding band aids and tissues from a bathroom, she went back downstairs still weary of her footing and slowly eased down the stairs.
Rose entered the living room and looked out a window. Night was falling and a magnificent sunset was outside. She quickly turned away from the window shaking her head; as if to rid herself of her thoughts of when her mother would show her how beautiful the world was- before she lingered on a subject she still hadn't fully processed, and wasn't sure she ever would truly process.
Whilst ridding her thoughts she saw another door she hadn't seen before. Rose tried opening it but it wouldn't move, she made a move to grab her backpack but her back stilled when she heard someone's voice.
"Put the knife down."
