Chapter 1

As I sat down at my table in the cafeteria, I tried not to look enviously at the crowded tables around me; I tried to tune out the laughs, the smiles, the discussions and the gossip of all these people chattering happily amongst themselves while I was all alone.  I hated this, I hated being alone and I missed my friends more than anything, right now.

I’m sure you’re confused right now, so let me explain.  It all started at the beginning of my junior year of high school when Helen, one of my best friends, decided that she wanted to start the new year with a bang and I would have been fine with that if she hadn’t wanted my other best friend, Camilla, to help her.

“Listen, Cammy, it’s all really simple, all you have to do is distract everyone for a while. I have it all figured out! When I give you the signal all you have to do is pretend to faint and then all the guys will be running to come to your rescue, creating a huge commotion, so I can easily pull the fire alarm before running to hide in the bathroom so that when everyone leaves I can start getting to work!”

I know, I know you would think this plan would never work but Camilla was the most beautiful person in our school with her shining blonde hair and bright blue eyes, so nearly all the boys were chasing after her. If it wasn’t for Helen scaring them all off, Camilla would have probably said yes to all of them being the push-over she is.  So this plan would have worked, but Camilla was nearly about to cry at just the thought of making such a big show of herself and so I just had to save her.

“Helen! You can’t tell her to do something like that; you know she would hate it!” I said.

“Well Caroline, if she doesn’t want to do it then she should just say so.” Helen replied.

“You know she won’t say no, but you can tell she doesn’t want to do it. Just look at her.”

“Well if she can’t say anything then I’m just going to think she’s going to do it! You want to do it, right Cammy?”

Camilla looked up at the mention of her name and as she saw Helen looking at her she quickly turned to look at me, alarmed.

“You don’t want to do it, right Cammy?” I asked.

Camilla looked at me then at Helen her head going back and forth like a pendulum. First she stared at my soft brown eyes, before she turned to look at Helen’s piercing green ones.  I knew that between Helen’s heated glare and my dark gaze Helen would easily win.

“What do you want to do Cammy?” I asked one last time.

She looked at Helen’s face one more time before saying “I want to do it.”

I walked away in anger, I had stuck my neck out for Camilla and she had basically tossed it in the trash.

After that things only got worse, because the next day Camilla and Helen had put the plan into action. The distraction went as planned and the fire alarm rang with a loud, echoing sound which made the students panic slightly before the teachers led us out into the field. The teachers were making sure we were all there and when one of them asked me where Helen was, Camilla popped out of nowhere and told her that she had gone to talk to someone in another line. The teacher mumbled under her breath before stalking away and Camilla tried to talk to me but I was still angry at her, so I stayed quiet.

“Come on, Caroline, I’m sorry. Please talk to me.”

I stayed silent.

“Ok fine, then just listen. Caroline, I’m grateful that you tried to protect me and I should have stood up for myself, but I had fun doing the prank I have never felt like this before. So confident, so exhilarated and I’m not so shy anymore, I feel great! So, Caroline please talk to me again, please?”
