It was a very sultry day when he told her about that girl he met the previous day, the pretty girl in a red dress. She always hated sultry days, they always brought her bad news.
She had fallen for him, that one day when he climbed her house at midnight just to be with her because he was missing her. She was sick that day and didnt go to college. She realised she loved him when she saw his handsome face, his built body holding on to her window sill. His face glowed in the moonlight, perfect as ever. She was lost in his eyes.
"Why are you looking at me like that? Are you still not okay?" He had asked her.
'I have never been better', she wanted to say. But she couldn't, some thing stopped her. The fear of rejection.
It was the same fear and feeling of rejection she felt right now, when he told her about the girl in red dress.
"She is really hot", he said, "smoking hot", he added.
She smiled at him, trying hard to control her tears from spilling over her cheeks.
'Everything will be ok. He is still your best friend. You are still his best friend. Its okay', she told herself."I think i am in love", he told her, dreamily.
"What was her name again?" She asked, trying to be enthusiastic.
"I dont know", he replied, dejected.
Then he suddenly brightened up and said, "but you can help me with it! She has french with you".
'Right, it was in her french classes that he had met that pretty girl', she remembered.
"Sure!", she said, faking a smile.
"Whats wrong?" He asked, noting her lack of enthusiasm. He admired his best friend for more reasons than he could ever explain of. He knew he wouldnt be the same without her. She was his mould. She was funny, crazy, hyper and everything else that he liked. A change in her mood would never miss his eyes. He knew her for long enough. They started high school together and now they are in their final year of college. They had decided to go to college together and get their degrees in business.
"Nothing, am just surprised that a girl finally caught your attention. You never speak of girls like this", she said, this time elbowing him in his ribs.
"Ow!" He cried, "what was that for? Anyway, i think i am really in love with her. Have you really seen her? She is gorgeous", he said, already forgetting that something was bothering her.
'He is in love', she swallowed back the lump in her throat and looked at him as he looked at the sky above. They were in their secret place on the terrace of the office building of their college. This place was under restricted area as it was really slippery and not safe during rainy seasons.
He laid on his back with a satisfied sigh, closing his eyes, his hands folded behind his head. She stared at him.
'How can you love your best friend?' She asked herself.
'How can you pollute the beauty of friendship. You and your hormones. Get a hold of them. He is not yours anymore. You might have him, but his heart is some where else. Some where very far away', she thought as traitor tears left her eyes to wet her soft cheeks.
She was the type of girl who hated relationships and the feeling that was love. But when she realised that she too was trapped in this sadist game of love, she lost it. She hated herself for being a part of something she always hated. She shouldn't love him, but she couldn't help it. She did not own her heart, she had no control over her heart, he had stolen it long ago, without even realising it.
'It was his and it always will be', she thought as she stared at the perfection before her, snoring lightly.
