"Where's Riley?" I shout to Farkle.
He looks up from his phone and points towards the lockers.
"You should help her. I don't think she's breathing," Farkle rolls his eyes.
I turn my head and see my best friend and Lucas Friar making out.
Barf.
Riley has had a crush on Lucas since the fifth grade, when he came to John Quincy Adams Elementary. In the 9th grade they started dating, and here we are 11th grade.
Lucas and I are pretty tight too. The whole group is. Farkle, Riley, Lucas, my four neighbours and I, we've done everything together since fifth grade.
Riley drops her books in the middle of her make-out session and scares herself. It's pretty hilarious to watch when she does stupid shit like that. Especially during sexual intercourse.
Lucas wipes his mouth when she turns around to pick them up. After she does, she returns to the make-out session, surprising Lucas as she pushes her mouth against his once more. Lucas starts to make his hands down towards her ass. This is where I decide to break it up.
"Riley!" I shout. No response.
"RILEY!" I shout again, and this time she turns around, and for the first time in the last 10 minutes, quits kissing Lucas.
"Maya don't you see I'm in the middle of something?" She looks at Lucas and he puts on a phoney smile.
"Yea you're always in the middle of something," I mumble beneath my breath, letting it slip out.
"Maya," Riley scoffs, "I still make time for you, I'm a very busy person and actually have a life."
My jaw drops in disgust, "Making out with Huckleberry 24/7 isn't a life, Riley!" I notice that Lucas chuckles at my remark. I blush. "Riley you never have time for me anymore and it's so stupid! You let Friar steal your life!" I unintentionally shout. I shouldn't have said that.
"Don't take your personal problems out on Luky-pooky, Maya! Just because you have a horrible home life doesn't mean you have to take it out on me and the love of my life! You always ruin things Maya! You're so greedy!" She screams.
I feel tears swelling in my eyes and realise that it's a good time to stop.
"Maya, please just leave!" Riley's eyes are turning red too. I don't know why. She's not the one being attacked.
"Okay," I say turning around and not even looking back.
"Selfish bitch!" I hear Riley mumble underneath her breath.
"Riley!" Lucas snaps.
I try to walk faster to get away from her before I hear anything else. I sit down on a bench by Farkle. I look at Farkle and he frowns seeing that I already have tear falling out of my eye.
"Oh god," I wipe it away quickly.
"What happened?" He asks
"Riley slipped again,"
"How badly this time?"
"Pretty badly. She needs to stop these pills! And going out with Lucas. They're changing her," I say as Farkle cradles my head in his arm.
"Hopefully one day she'll get off of the anti-depressants, it's hard seeing her like that, and you know she loves Lucas. They are going to get married one day I swear," Farkle says.
Farkle looks up and I hear a voice behind me.
"Maya," a wobbling voice says from behind me, "Maya, I'm so sorry! You...you know I'm not like this. I love...I love you and I promise I'll make time for you."
It's Riley. She's back. I don't know what to do so I just close my eyes and breathe in Farkle's cologne. I lift my head and turn around.
"It's okay Riley I understand," I say. She has waterfalls of tears on her face and it's so swollen red from crying.
She nods and cries some more. I stand up and she slides down besides Farkle sucking snot up her nose, and rubbing the excess on her hands and shirt.
"Um, I'll go get some tissues," I say trying to leave the awkward convo.
"Riley stay here with me," Farkle says as he wraps his arm around Riley, cradling her like he did me.
I hear the bell ring and decide I should probably go get them now so I won't be late to my classes.
"I'll go with you," says Lucas from behind me. I feel shivers race down my spine.
We start to walk and I notice that there isn't anyone in the hallway that the janitor's closet is in.
I walk some more and feel the need to speak to Lucas. I grab the tissues and shut the closet. And turn around.
"Lucas, I'm worried about Riley," I say staring straight into his eyes.
I try not to start crying but do anyway.
"Like really really worried," I start squabbling, "and I know it's not your fault and-"
"Shhh, it's okay," Lucas shushes me.
I sniffle and realise how ugly I must look crying.
"Oh god, I probably look terrible," I fake laugh.
Lucas doesn't say anything, but grabs my face and slowly moves towards my lips. I want to move in also but am paralysed. I can't hurt Riley!
That's when Lucas stops and says, "I can't hurt Riley like that."
He pulls his head back and drops his hands.
"I should go, really," he mumbles and staggers off into the next hallway.
