The infamous Ibrahim "Abe" Mazur, who is a moroi, is Rose's father. While the famous Janine Hathaway, who is a dhampir, is her mother. She was raised at the "Vampire Academy" as she called it. Saint Vladimir's Academy where the moroi and dhampirs alike have classes together until fourth period. For dhampirs, it's fighting time. For the moroi, it's magic time working with the four elements of the world: fire, water, earth, and air. However there is one more that is from within the body and it's called Spirit. Rose's best friend, (former Princess) Queen Vasilisa Dragomir, has the ability to wield the element of spirit. Both, Rose and Lissa have been friends ever since Rose was raised at the academy. One year however, Rose and the Dragomirs were driving back to the academy, but it late at night.

Lissa said, " Oh, I love this song. Turn it up dad please."

" This song is stupid." Andre said.

" It's got a good beat." their father said.

Then, right about the time their father started to turn the song up, a drunk semi truck driver smashed into the suburban. Lissa had taken a look around at what had happened. At first she saw that her parents and brother were both dead then she looked at her own arms and then to Rose. Rose, she thought, what would I do without you. Lissa stretched her arm out to Rose and brought her back to life. For Rose had died in the accident.

When Rose woke up she said, " We can't go back to the academy like this." At this she thought for a while, " We will go to Portland, Oregon."

They had made three years, until the academy sent the hot muscular Russian guy to bring them back to Saint Vladimir's Academy.

" Hello, Princess, my name is Dimitri Belikov. I have come to take you back to Saint Vladimir's Academy." stated the guy in a deep Russian accent.

" Oh, to get to her you will have to go through me." Rose commented in her sarcastic tone as she started toward Dimitri.

When Rose got within an arm's length away, Dimitri threw his hand out, palm outward and hit Rose right in the chest causing her to fly back. But before she could hit the asphalt he ran to her side and stopped her before any serious damage was done. However once they had gotten back into the SUV, Dimitri decided to put hand cuffs on Rose so there was no way of escaping now.

" Hand cuffs, seriously?" Rose asked groggily. Dimitri nodded.

" So do you know what's going to happen when we get back to the academy?" she asked.

" No idea." said Dimitri with that adorable accent.

" It speaks." Rose said surprised.

As they pulled up to the entrance gate for the academy, however, all conversation stopped with one swift movement of Dimitri's hand. It was dead silent as the five of them sat silently in SUV. Lissa sitting in between two guardians in the backseat while Rose and Dimitri sit up front. Then there they were, Strigoi, blood-sucking vampire they are the bad ones. Dimitri slowly pulled out his silver stake from his coat. He then told the other two to get out telling Lissa and Rose to stay put.

" No problem, Comrade." Rose said with a hint of her sarcasm.

Dimitri had killed six Strigoi before, Rose could tell from the number of molnija marks he had around his promise mark on the back of his neck. Rose sat there frozen and watch as the guardians wrestled around with the strigoi, until one of those nasty things shoved one of the guardians against the outside one of the windows of the SUV, and he dug his teeth into the guardians neck. She got out of the vehicle and stared at the body of the strigoi that the guardian had "killed" but as she looked down at that body. The strigoi gasped, Rose gasped herself, Dimitri jumped out from behind a tree and shoved the stake into the strigoi's heart and pulled Rose by the arm.

As they drove through the gate to the school, Dimitri asked, " You really don't know how to stay put do you?"

That was a rhetorical question so Rose kept her mouth shut. Except to say this, "So we are back at the Vampire Academy." Rose said.

"Please don't say that, Rose." Lissa said innocently.

"Why?" Rose asked as Lissa looked at her with a pathetic look. " Oh, yeah, sorry." she said as she looked down at the ground. Until they had walked into Headmistress Kirova's office. So as she looked around Kirova's office Kirova just stared blankly at Rose and Lissa as they sat there waiting to know what was going to happen.

"Well?" Headmistress Kirova asked with a hint of hatred.

"Well what?" Rose asked with that same hint of hatred.

"Why did you do it?" Kirova asked as she tsked on her desk.

"Really, Headmistress, you're going to have to be more clear. I don't have the slightest idea what you mean by , Why did you do it?" Rose said.

"Rosemarie Hathaway, you should know exactly what I am talking about. You took the Princess away from the place that she is safest. What can you say for yourself?" Kirova said annoyed.

"It wasn't her idea." Lissa said quietly.

"Why are you doing this Lissa? You do know you're saving my butt right?" Rose asked under her breath.

"What are you talking about?" Lissa asked. "It wasn't your idea."

"Enough the both of you!" Headmistress Kirova exclaimed. " Rose, I am going to e-mail your mother that you are expelled for this unruly act. Lissa as the last of the Dragomir line you must stay here."

"WHAT?!" Rose had lost her cool, " YOU CAN'T DO THAT! Do you know how much trouble I will be in with my mother?" Rose screamed.

That's when Viktor Dashkov walked in, causing Lissa some excitement and Rose just said, " Hey, Prince Dashkov."

Then it was Dimitri's turn," Headmistress Kirova, I will personally train Rose myself if I need to, however if you put her on house arrest I will need her at every break. I saw that on the way back Lissa and Rose have a bond they can't be separated." he said.

Kirova looked astounded, " How is this possible?"

"It appears to me that Lissa has the ability to heal others with her mind. That isn't an elemental power though. I believe that this is Spirit." Dimitri said.

"That's true," Viktor said with a fit of coughs.

Lissa looking as innocent as ever said," Oh, Viktor, you don't sound good at all."

"Don't you worry about me, dear. My sandorvskez disease has been getting worse by the hour. But I promise you this is not the biggest problem at hand. You and Rose are." Viktor stated matter-of-factly.

Now it was Lissa's turn to be astounded, " How could you say that?!"

"Really, my child, you ran away with an untrained, immature dhampir." Viktor said.

"Finally, at least someone agrees with me. Thank You, Viktor." Kirova said.

"Don't mention it anything I can do to keep Vasilisa safe." Viktor said as he fought through another coughing fit.

"I can't believe you, Viktor, my family trusted you!" Lissa screamed.

Kirova said," Belikov get these two girls out of here. Oh and Rose you will need to be at the gym every minute you are not in class, you will need to be in training with Guardian Belikov and you will need to eat your breakfast and dinner in your room no exceptions."

"Yes, ma'am," Rose said.

"Thank you, now get out." Kirova said.
