The sun beams in the direction of my eyes and the brightness wakes me up. The moment I open my eyes I am blinded by the light. I sit my self up as my back aches and cracks. Then, I look around me to realize that I fell asleep in my desk chair. My eyes widen as I realize that I may have not finished my drawing, but that feeling drains away fast when I look down and see the completed drawing in front of me. A soft smile appears on my face when I see the 2-D figure of Caleb on the paper.
I finally force myself to get up, even though I am exhausted from only sleeping for about three hours. I drag myself to my closet and struggle to pick out an outfit while keeping my eyes open. I really need an energy boost, so I sneak to the fridge to grab a Monster. I down the energy drink and get rid of it before my dad notices because he hates that I drink them. They are pretty nasty, but they give me energy when I need it.
I return to my closet and continue scanning it over and over to find the right outfit to wear for today's event. I finally decide on black jeans with a light pink top and a grey sweater. I match it with my pink heels and then go out into the kitchen where my dad and Jilly are waiting. The Monster is starting to kick in, I am feeling jittery. On top of my nerves, my energy is slowly increasing causing me to feel a little sweaty and dizzy, but I shake it off. I grab an apple off the counter and the drawing from last night before following my dad and sister out to the car. Once I am in the passengers seat, I lose my appetite for my apple and instead of eating, I start thinking about all the possible outcomes for today.
The drive to the court was quiet, but the sense of impatient was in the air. Once we pull into the parking lot of the court house my dad and sister step out of the car. With adrenaline and Monster pumping in my veins I sit in the car still practically shaking. The nerves are building up in me, so I take a deep breath and finally exit the car.
-
Once we are inside the court house, I walk slowly down the middle aisle without looking up until I get to the front rows. I sit in the first row behind Caleb's side with Jilly to my left. I hear a door to my right open up and I jump up to see that it was Caleb being guided in by my dad and another cop. There was already a lawyer waiting for him at the table. Caleb looks so tired and depressed as he stares into the ground, but when I lock eyes with him a small smile appears on his face. That small gesture made my stomach erupt with butterflies.
I watch as Caleb walks over to the table and takes a seat. Now, he is about two to three feet in front of me and it is killing me that I can't talk to him. My thoughts are broken when I feel a tug at the sleeve of my sweater. I look down in Jilly's direction and notice her little hands wrapped around my sleeve. She asks, "Alex, why is your forehead so sweaty and drippy?"
I gasp slightly as I run my hands over my face and feel sweat everywhere I touch. My head is slightly spinning, but I am still stable and now I don't have to get up and walk around until I have to speak. I look up and notice my dad looking at me with concern. I am assuming he heard my slight gasp since he is only a few feet in front of me. To make him feel better, I give him a reassuring smile.
Finally, the judge enters the room and the wait for the trial is over. I turn to Jilly who is swinging her dangling legs and humming a song softly and whisper to her, "Shhh now, okay? It is about to start!"
-
It is about 45 minutes into the trial and everything is rolling smoothly. Then, the judge announces, "I would like to call up Alexandra Hill to speak on the side of Mr. Woods." I get up slowly trying to maintain my balance and make my way to the aisle. My head is spinning so much that my vision is now very blurry. I can fee the sweat trickling down the sides of my face as I enter the front portion of the court room. The only thing that I am thinking is that if I make it to the podium, I'll be okay. Just as I reached the front of the podium, my legs go numb and my eyes roll to the back of my head. I feel myself just let everything go and hit my head on the corner of the podium as I come crashing on to the ground. I see people moving as my vision starts disappearing and my drawing of Caleb slips out of my grip. Then, everything goes black.
-
My eyes flutter open and I groan in pain as I try to immediately try and sit myself up. It takes me a moment to realize that I am in a hospital and remember why I am here in the first place. I look around the room and see no one in here. After, I remember Caleb's trial and my eyes widen at the realization that I am missing it. Thinking too much about how that is going, I try to get myself standing, but as I try my knees are unable to keep me up. I fall back onto the bed and just stare at the ceiling wondering what is going on there.
I am pulling out of my own thoughts when I hear the crack of the room door open. My dad walks in with a Doctor following behind him. The doctor smiles once he sees that I am awake and asks, "How do you feel?"
"I am okay, just a little weak. What happened with me? And what happened at Caleb's trial? Is it over?" I begin to ramble a little, then my father puts a hand on my shoulder as a gesture to shut up.
Laughing, the doctor explains, "Well you see you were dehydrated, what did you eat today?"
I smile nervously and say, "I actually didn't eat. I just drank a full can of Monster, you know, the energy drink."
"Hey! What did I say about drinking those, especially all at once!" My dad jumps in.
I keep laughing nervously as the doctor tells me, "Those energy drinks are really dehydrating. They make you thirsty without you realizes and they increase your adrenaline. Then, I heard something about a trial about a friend of yours. I am guessing your nerves about that didn't make this any better. Those two things combined was too overwhelming for you to handle."
I nod slowly as the doctor gets up and exits the room pulling the door behind him. Before my dad can ask me anything about how I am feeling I ask, "What happened with Caleb? Where is he? How did it go?"
My dad is about to answer, but he is cut off by the door opening. He just smiles at the door and I turn my head to face the now fully open door. "Well I guess you can say that it went well being that I am standing here right now," Caleb said standing in the door way. The butterflies of his presence fills my stomach and a wide smile spreads across my face.
He comes to my bed side and sits down while grabbing onto my hand. My dad exits the room happily so we can talk about what happened. Caleb explains, "After your little incident everyone was all frazzled and panicked. Then, after a good 10 to 15 minutes everything was calm again and we continued the trial. At first the people were turning against me until they realized that the opposing side had no evidence that it was me. After that it was obvious that it wasn't me and I was false accused. After a little more talking they finally let me go. Plus, my parents are going to legally get a divorce and he won't be around us anymore.''
With the little strength I have, I squeeze Caleb's hand with excitement. He leans down, plants a kiss on my forehead and tells me, "From now on, I am not going anywhere without you." The warm fuzzy feeling spreads throughout my body, but it quickly disappears when I remember the drawing that I made for him.
"Wait, did someone get the paper that I dropped when I fell? I hop that it's still there and..." before I could even finish my panic rant, he pulls the paper out of his pocket. Then he unfolds it while laughing and says, "You mean this?"
I smile at the fact that he has it and the rush of relief comes over me. I look at Caleb and smile softly. I sit my self up more and say, "Now let's get out of here."
