Chapter III: Part Two: Something Under His Sleeve
I woke up the next morning with sleep draping itself on me like a heavy cloak. I stumble through the narrow passage way to the bathroom to wash my face with water. I swing open the door, causing it to swing right back, hitting me on my side. I don't bother to look in the mirror. It will make me feel bad about myself and my bedhead. Turning the stainless steel faucet, I duck my head under the stream of water. Specks of blood appear before my vision. I let out a scream, thinking- I don't know what I was thinking, actually.
I pulled my head out of the sink, stepping back and observing the blood and myself. I was fine, but I don't think the previous person here is. I came to the conclusion that either Eli or Max had cut themselves shaving. I splashed the blood down the drain, making a concious effort not to touch it. Max storms into the bathroom. His eyes are alert.
"Is everything okay?" he asks.
"Yeah," I reply. "Did you cut yourself shaving?" I ask while inspecting his face.
"No. How come?"
I shake my head forgetting the thought.
"Well then, good morning, love." Max says, kissing me on my nose. I smile.
We walk down together to the dinning hall to see Eli sitting by himself in a long sleeve jacket. I sit down next to him.
"Dude, aren't you hot under that jacket?''
Eli shakes his head and continues to play around with his food. It looks like he has been crying.
"are you okay, Eli?" I question.
"I am fine. If I wasn't I would tell you, Meghan." He snaps back. Beads of blood seep through his white sleeve.
Eli has been cutting his wrists.
"Uh, Max. Can I please talk to you?" I say as I get out of my chair.
I pull Max around the corner.
"I think Eli is-" I look both ways. I continue. "I think Eli is cutting his wrists."
Max lets out a snort and pushes me away from him.
"Wait!" I grab him by his tie. "It all adds up. Eli leaving us behind, the blood in the bathroom sink, the long sleeved jacket? This is serious Max."
"Meg," He continues. "If you can proove it to me then maybe I would believe it. He is a great student and is an awesome kid. Eli not like that."
Fustration boiled up inside of me. I knew Max wouldn't understand or take this very serioulsy.
"Fine," I said agreeing with a sigh. "I suppose I was just over thinking everything."
He shows an irritated smile. We walk back to our seats trying to act normally without raising any eyebrows. But deep inside I know that Eli is definetly harming himself- and need to confront him about it.
