I followed him for a while, until he suddenly stopped. I didn't realize how closely I had been following until I bumped into him. I jumped back, hoping he wouldn't get upset. He didn't seem to have noticed. He turned around.
"James. Do you know who he really is?" He asked suddenly.
"N-no. But why does it matter? Even if he's on the run for a crime, so am I."
He laughed loudly after I said that, doubling over. "You? A criminal? You couldn't even leave a book out at the library without looking like you'd killed a puppy!"
I froze up. "Y-you were watching me?" I asked angrily. He shrugged, as if it didn't matter that much. I took a deep breath. "So... what's your name, anyways?" I asked.
He looked like he didn't want to tell me, but he did anyways. "It's Jeff. You're (Y/N), right?"
"Yeah." I muttered, wondering how he knew my name. I shivered. "It's freezing..." I commented.
"Get over it. If you think I'm giving you my jacket, you're mistaken." He said simply. It was a little rude, but I didn't care much anyways.
"I didn't want your jacket anyw-" He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me, without saying a word. He was really warm...
But also a psychotic murderer. I pushed my way out of his hold. "You killed my roommate and got me charged for murder. Sorry if I can't exactly trust you." I explained.
He shrugged. "Then you can freeze." He sat down on a log and pat the space beside him. I sat down, and scooted a little closer to him. It was really cold and I didn't want to get sick. Without the fire pit or blanket from my camp, I was freezing, and sure to get hypothermia if I didn't get warm soon.
He tensed up when I got close to him, but soon relaxed. "James isn't innocent. He's a serious criminal, who escaped from prison a few days ago."
I shook my head. "Criminals aren't like that. They take what they want, when they want. They aren't nice."
He was silent. He seemed to be thinking about what I'd said. "You took your dead roommate's cash, and aren't being very nice to me. Doesn't that make you the criminal?"
I bit my lip, thinking. I haven't been that nice to him, have I? I felt bad about it, but why would I be kind to someone that threatened my life?
"That's different." I argued.
"How?" He shot back, as if he knew I was going to say that.
He was right, but that didn't mean I wasn't going to argue. "You killed my roommate! You ran off, leaving no trace you were ever there, and now my life is ruined! I'll never get a proper job, because I was a suspect in a murder case!" I stood up, my temper exploding. "Then you knocked me out and cut my face while I was sleeping, you threatened to slit my throat, and then tried to kill the only person that doesn't know I'm wanted for killing someone!"
He lowered his head, reaching into his pocket. I froze. Was he going to pull out a knife? Had I gone too far?
He pulled out my camera, handing it to me. When had he picked it up?
"Here. Take it, already." He said, shoving it towards me. I accepted it, putting it in my pocket. Why was he giving it back? Did he want me to take a picture with it? "Now, follow me." He said, leading me deeper into the woods.
After a few minutes of walking, my flashlight bulb began to flicker. I wasn't too worried, until it ran out of batteries completely. I reached into my bag's pocket, but found a hole, and no batteries. I cursed under my breath.
