Chapter Fourteen – Something Dark and Something Fishy

“She’s in her Tempest,” the demon lady sighs. I’m surprised she isn’t drooling from the side of her mouth. As we stand there, her teeth sharpen into points and her irises shine brighter. Xander shudders under the man’s grip choking him. Excited by the way she scared us, her stare narrows at me lying on the floor. “Jared, I can feel it from here.”

“I know,” her husband replies with the same thirst morphing his features. Their nails elongate into sharp claws as black as a raven. I back into the wall but my ankle remains two feet away from Xander connected by the chain. The realtor smirks at the fear plainly written on our faces. His demonic laugh —and I mean that in a scary literal way— echoes with the couple’s. But I notice that he isn’t changing. I turn my gaze to Xan who struggles to breathe.

“Gahh!” My best friend’s cry of pain makes tears start to drip from my eyes. The realtor punches him across the face with his free hand again and again. As Xan opens his swelling eye, he stares at me. But instead of the desperate plea for help I am probably wearing, his features are furious. And I know never to get in the way of an angry Xander. The couple laughs maniacally while he catches his breath and focuses his eyes on the one holding him.

With a speed that renders us all stunned, the boy kicks off from the wall into the realtor. Xan lands one good blow to the side of the demon’s chest. He stumbles back with the force as Xander stands and massages his neck while trying to breathe. We huddle with each other and search for any type of weapon. Even with that little spat, the three find us no challenge. I just hope their wrong.

“Think you’re tough, do you?” The realtor punches Xander once more, crashing him onto me. I spit back at them but they only find my anger amusing. My best friend coughs but wiped away the bit of blood on the side of his mouth. He doesn’t go down without a fight and today standing beside him, neither do I.

The husband, Jared, draws closer and removes his football sports jacket. He’s only clothed in his blue jeans and a white tank now. Blue veins slither under his grey spotted skin. The woman does the same, shedding her house jacket to her sleeveless blouse. Their necks start twitching intensely as if they’re straining to keep something inside them. Oh please, let them keep whatever it is inside!

“Come on. Ladies first,” the female demon whines.

“Maybe if you were a lady.”

“Shut up, Jared!”

The realtor hisses at the bickering couple —I guess they’re a couple— and turns his back to us. Normally I would have taken this as an opportunity to get out of there but the three are blocking the only exit and I don’t feel like nose diving out of the second floor window. The business man straightens up, trying to keep his formality in check. But I can tell he’s just as interested in eating us as they are.

“Shall I leave you two so you may feed?” The couple snarls him away. Disappointedly, the man storms out of the room. He leaves one last look at us and winks in my direction. As if I wasn’t already terrified enough! His footsteps disappear down the hallway and out of the house. The two remaining demons straighten up, relaxing before coming closer.

“My, my,” the woman starts. “What a strange one.”

“Susan,” Jared whispers seductively in his lover’s ear. “I want her blood first.”

My mouth opens to say anything but I can’t manage any words. They want my blood! Xan grabs onto my hand and squeezes. He’s still trying to accept this as reality while figuring a way out in his mind but I see no hope for us. Susan pushes the demon man’s shoulder away and points to Xander.
